Kroger joins rivals in halting purchase of "pink slime" beef
By Ian Simpson
WASHINGTON | Thu Mar 22, 2012 4:46pm EDT
(Reuters) - The biggest U.S. supermarket chain, Kroger Co, will stop buying the ammonia-treated beef product critics call "pink slime," bowing to consumer pressure one day after the nation's No. 2 and 3 grocers rejected the product.
Safeway Inc and Supervalu Inc said on Wednesday that they would also stop buying the product, which the meat industry calls finely textured beef.
"Our customers have expressed their concerns that the use of lean finely textured beef ... is something they do not want in their ground beef, " Kroger said in a statement, which noted that the Agriculture Department has said finely-textured beef is safe.

I have been a regular customer @ Kroger for a number of years. I tend to be very selective in my choice of meat products. I guess I am very pleased with this development but can only imagine what other techniques will be used to try to maintain profitability of meat products.

Stop & Shop will no longer buy 'finely textured beef'
By Chris Reidy , Globe Staff
The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. said that it will no longer purchase fresh ground beef containing so-called finely textured beef.
Quincy-based Stop & Shop said it was reacting to customer concerns over the issue while noting that the US Department of Agriculture has indicated that this product is safe for consumption.
Finely textured beef is a term used for treated ground beef filler. Critics have branded some kinds of these fillers as pink slime.
