Kansas pageant winner calls tweets over Coke ad a mistake

A Kansas woman who received widespread backlash for her tweets about a Super Bowl commercial said Monday that her comments were a “mistake.”

Kasey Knowles, who in November was crowned National American Miss Kansas 2013, was among several people who criticized a Coca-Cola advertisement aired during the Super Bowl. The commercial featured a rendition of “America the Beautiful” sung in multiple languages alongside images of America’s landscape and people.

Many on Twitter criticized the commercial – some called it “un-American” and an “outrage” because it featured languages other than English – and within minutes, #boycottcoke was a trending topic on the social media site.

Knowles, whose Twitter profile at the time said “Miss Kansas 2013” and featured a photograph of herself wearing a Miss Kansas sash, tweeted: “Nothing about that #CocaCola commercial was American.”

About an hour later, she posted, “I’m sorry if you were offended by my previous tweet, but I truly feel that ‘America the Beautiful’ should not be sung in any other language.”

I thought singing our national anthem is other languages--was a compliment to our great country. Here you have these people from other nations, who chose to come here and make their homes here--and they are singing OUR beloved national anthem in their language. It is an act of love and respect for our country!

Can you imagine going over to Denmark, putting down roots and then ultimately singing their national anthem in english? This would indicate that you LOVE that country. Also, a symbol that you have retained your own identity and American customs--and you embrace this amazing new world. And you honor and celebrate your new home by singing their national anthem.

I think it's beautiful.

I don't get how anyone can see anything but beauty in that commercial.

...in my Facebook feed. I don't agree with 90 percent of what he says, but he is a consummate communicator and I often respond on his FB page--to keep a bit of sanity inside the crazy bubble. So, I do see what "the other side" is saying.

This Coke thing has blown me away. Hands down--right wingers are infuriated by the Coke commercial. They are disgusted beyond repair.

I don't get it. I watched that commercial and I had tears when it was finished. I thought it displayed that we are a nation of many cultures, with people hailing from all over the globe. I thought it was beautiful!

From what I've read, the right has their hair on fire because they believe that these people should be speaking english, not their own language. One poster pointed out that it is a legal prerequisite of citizenship to speak english. Their arguments are so bizarre. It's just jarring to watch them hold onto such outrage--over nothing.

I mean...what about "e pluribus unum"? "Out of many, one". Isn't that what this commercial represents in spades???

the reaction was weird. She thought it was one of the better commercials. Still I am a little offended by using that song to sell a product (not nearly as offended as those who use the majestic Hallelujah chorus from Handel's Messiah to sell products). You want to use the Stones, Bob Segar, even The Who ok, but leave Handel alone.

Here's her apology:

“I wanted to take a moment to sincerely apologize to anyone that may have been offended by my words. I in no way meant to hurt anyone’s feelings and humbly ask that you please accept my deepest apology,” she wrote.

“Social media has made it even easier to broadcast your opinions faster than you have time to say them out loud. I accept my fault in this action but also ask others to grant me the freedom of that mistake,” she wrote in the statement. “As Ghandi once said, ‘Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.’ ”

She must truly love having the freedom to make mistakes, because she made yet another in her apology. Or is the Kansas City Star responsible for misspelling Gandhi?
