Poll: Do you support Obama and the TPP?

Sat Jan 25, 2014 at 07:12 PM PST

There must be a way to blame this thing on the Republicans, but I can't figure out how to do it for myself, so I'm hoping that any number of Democratic Party hacks will flood the comments with excuses for the President!

Obama and the TPP!

The TPP would replicate and expand to additional countries the trade agreement model established in the NAFTA. Twenty years of evidence of NAFTA's contribution to U.S. income inequality has become a major problem for Obama's push to get Congress to provide Fast Track authority for the massive TPP deal, described as NAFTA on steroids.

Not a single House Democrat would sponsor the legislation submitted two weeks ago to establish Fast Track. Last week, 17 Senate Democrats made their feelings known in letters to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). And last November, 151 House Democrats signed a letter saying they oppose Fast Track, arguing that lawmakers have been cut out of negotiations.

I don't think it's much of a winner, though, if so many House Dems are getting in fist-shaking mode about it.

Curious poll question--kind of like asking "Do you like ice cream and beheading?"

Last I checked, Congress passes laws.

About the only thing a POTUS can do is pull a veto; he can't pull votes out of his ass, particularly when there's solid push-back against a course of action from members of his own party.

I'm not the type of person who "hates" someone because they do something of which I normally disapprove. If that were the case, I'd be "hating" on my favorite new Senator, who voted to PREVENT the Pentagon from getting rid of a battlefield equipment manufacturing load of waste that they didn't want and do not need in this climate. She did it for pure pork barrel/all politics is local/save jobs making unnecessary crap reasons, and I can understand why she'd do that, even though it then makes it kind of difficult to lecture the Pentagon on wasteful expenditures after-the-fact.

The construct of the query was bogus. Do you "hate" your children when they do something of which you disapprove? Of course not.

The word you seek is "ratified." And that would require 2/3 of the Senate to make that happen.

If we enter into this 'partnership,' a number of US laws will need to be changed, is what I understand, because -- if rumors about what are in these proposals are true -- our existing laws on things like copyright particulars and fair use might not match up with what is being proposed.

responses what your position is. I do not nor do I support any Democrat supporting it. They are supposed to be the party of the people. THIS abomination will destroy even further, the working class in this country. No Democrat could possibly support that.

I can't claim to "support" it--I have not "read" it. Have you?

I don't like what I'm hearing (151 D reps taking issue, for example), but I will wait to actually read the thing before I dust off my pitchfork and light my torch. I will continue to try to get more information about it, in particular, the SPECIFICS of the agreement that are being proposed, that will change existing US laws.

Perhaps you can be helpful in this regard, and tell me exactly how this agreement is going to destroy the working class in this country. Most of the gripes I have read about have to do with copyrights and regulation of the internet, not jobs.

I'll welcome some good linkage to study up on the topic. I'll bet I'm not the only one who is ready to learn more about this subject.

It's being negotiated in secret and Obama and the other corporatists are trying to ram it through Congress.

So if you wait til its actually written it'll be too late. it will be set in stone.

to see it. Foreign Corps can see it, but not our elected officials. Based on that alone, there is no question that it should be opposed. They now allow Foriegn Corps to write our laws, then pass them to Congress to sign. Never mind the TPP, how did this happen, that outsiders help write our laws, and Congress is not allowed a peek at them beforehand?

Thanks to Wikileaks however, we have finally seen some of the poison they are planning for Americans. And now we know why they worked so hard to keep it all so secret.

I think that international trade does far more good that harm for all trading countries, but I vigorously oppose the TPP. From what I've seen it is much more of a corporate protection pact than an attempt to lower trade barriers.
