A shout out to "ignore"

I rarely respond to posts anymore and it is even more rare for me to start a post but it seems like every time I come to DU I find myself trying to rewrite "How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)" with references to "ignore"

I don't think I could keep coming here if it wasn't for ignore.

I periodically go through and reassess my ignore list - and when I first joined DU I found that, more often than not, the people I put on ignore were tombstoned not long after that. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore but, then, I don't spend as much time here as I used to and I'm putting more people on ignore. Sigh. I may stop reassessing.

I just wish there was a feature like ignore for my job

Thank goodness there's an option to shut them out so that I never see opinions at variance with my own.

I know I'm right; what point is there to engage people who have the wrong answer?

Please show me where in my post I said I put people who disagree with me on ignore?

I have NO PROBLEM hearing from people who think differently than I do. In fact, I have changed some of my views because of reasoned and polite discussions right here on DU. I've also solidified some of my views because of those same types of discussions which forced me to think deeper about what I feel and identify why I feel that way. I've learned new things which have informed my attitudes about issues which I had never even thought of before I came to DU.

You just:

1) Made an erroneous assumption about me based on how you interpreted what I wrote and
2) Responded in a sarcastic manner

Why? Why was your default assumption that I was talking about a difference in opinion? Why did you need to be sarcastic in your response? Could you have made your point without the sarcasm? Could you have asked a question to clarify your assumption?

Over the 6 years I've been coming here, the proportion of the discourse which adopts this sort of default tone has increased - which is why my ignore list has grown. Debate does not require sarcasm and sarcasm tends to shut down reasonable debate.

some of them are long-gone trolls, others are swooners I can probably take off Ignore in 2017, and others are just plain stupid assholes who I will forever ignore

But there is an avoid option. If you use it sparingly nobody will catch on.

However, I am a host for a DU-Group and can only ignore those that have been banned from the group (I need to be able to see all posts, not just those with which may I agree.) Otherwise, most of the septics and anti-theists would have been gone from my sight long ago.

As for your job, I have found headphones work wonderfully at helping me to ignore most co-workers
