Davis, a second-term state senator, saw her popularity skyrocket when her stand in the now-famous pink running shoes drew thousands of demonstrators to the state capitol and played out in livestreams on websites across the United States.
The bill would have banned most abortions after 20 weeks and imposed strict new requirements on clinics. It eventually passed, but Davis' newfound popularity continued and she was able to add $1 million to her campaign coffer.
Davis, who unseated a Republican incumbent to win her Senate election, seeks the spot held by Republican Gov. Rick Perry, the former presidential contender who has said he will not seek re-election.
Davis emphasized education and healthcare during her announcement at a rally on Thursday afternoon at the coliseum where she received her high school diploma, in the working-class Fort Worth suburb of Haltom City. About two dozen anti-abortion protesters carried signs outside the coliseum during the event.
Davis took the stage as the Alicia Keys song, "This Girl is on Fire," blared over loudspeakers.

(84,039 posts)Many Americans first came to the realization of the oppressive policies being instituted in the state of Texas with the heroic filibuster effected by Texas State Senator Wendy Davis last Tuesday. That filibuster was just a continuation of an incessant fight by valiant Texas women who refuse to capitulate to a Texas undemocratic Republican Party.
The first big March on the Texas Capitol on women issues in recent times was the War On Women Rally in April of 2012. It was successful in that it showed Austin that there was a building revolt which slowed down some of the oppressive legislations.

(84,039 posts)You don't judge a book by its cover. You read the story and learn its depth.
You judge a person by how they look? Or just a woman by how she looks?

(84,039 posts)There is a ton of ugly portrayed in the news, fauxsnooze cycle. Maybe not their face, yet their souls are ugly, vile and full of unprecedented hate.
Oh, I am not getting you wrong. I know exactly what you are saying. Do not include me in your opinions. You do not know me, so do not assume you do. You judge a women by how she looks not by what she stands for. A pretty face and an empty mind. Nope you are wrong. You post on a thread about Wendy Davis, yet you know nothing of her. Why is that?
Enjoy your stay at DU~

Why We Should All Support Wendy Davis for Governor of Texas
"Texas Governor Rick Perry has made no effort to hide his disdain for Davis or her background (Clifton, 2013). Although he is not running for re-election, hes done everything he can to demean and downplay Davis and her credentials. And the person shell most likely be running against is more radical than Governor Perry, if thats even possible (Clifton, 2013)."
Their tactics should Backfire right back in their ugly lying collective face.

(297,983 posts)"Davis was relatively unknown until last June, when she captured the attention of the nation as she filibustered the ultra-conservative Texas state senate on womens reproductive rights. Although she lost that fight, thousands demonstrated in her support; indeed, she earned the respect and support of Democrats and women from across the country.
I was one of them. As a woman of a certain age, in the last months, I have been increasingly distressed as the Republican Party turned back years of progress on womens rights. Even though I claim the status of a woman of a certain age, the women who worked so hard for these changes were older than I am. While I grew up hearing horror stories, they were not my stories.
It has been a long time now. Moreover, with time, the stories and the reasons why anyone ever worked so hard for these rights seems somehow lost to history.
They are not lost to Wendy Davis. Raised by a single mom, as a teenager she too became a single mom, living in a trailer park in Texas. She didnt let that hold her back, and she went on to study at Harvard Law School.
Texas Governor Rick Perry has made no effort to hide his disdain for Davis or her background (Clifton, 2013). Although he is not running for re-election, hes done everything he can to demean and downplay Davis and her credentials. And the person shell most likely be running against is more radical than Governor Perry, if thats even possible (Clifton, 2013)."

I was among them. I came of age in the seventies. While the fights for womens rights were still being raged, the bra burning womens libbers were older than me, and I was too young to understand completely.
In those days, so many women were dying from illegal backroom abortions; the concern seemed to preempt all other. Our high school physical education (PE) teacher kept trying to tell us about the things she felt that we, as young women, needed to know. We had lecture after lecture about the dangers of backroom abortions and clothes hangers.
In a time when to be unmarried and with child meant living as an outcast and in poverty, illegal and makeshift abortions were a tremendous risk to the lives of unmarried women who found themselves pregnant.

(29,414 posts)That's a work truck, and unlike most of the trucks around here with conservative stickers on them. Those trucks are in pristine condition, are driven 90 miles one-way into "work" because they want to live as far away from the inner city as possible, and have never been on a work site or had a load of gravel dumped in the back.
That truck above has seen better days, and is ready for them again! Go Wendy!
And yes, I donated a couple of months ago, and will do so again soon
