Iodine 131 has a half life of 8 days so any 131 from Fukushima would be quite reduced by the time it arrives at the West Coast. Radioactive cesium is another matter altogether. I don't think iodine tabs will help with that.

How many pill manufacturers would want to run such a small order? If you've got a machine that'll make 800 blister packs per minute - and from what I see online, 800 blisters per minute is a medium-speed machine - this is less than two days' production.

They probably have one manufacturer in mind to make this, and are letting the contract just to be all legal and everything.

States are legally responsible for considering buying and stocking Potassium Iodine for use locally near nuclear power plants.

The Federal Government is mainly responsible only for preparing for it's FEMA teams, the U.S. Military, and those segments of the federal government directly responsible for reacting to/ responding to a nuclear incident. It does not provide tabs for local populations- that is the state government planner's role. These tabs - 700,000, are to provide an approximate 2 day supply to those federal government employees/ FEMA teams/ Soldiers-Troops who might be within 10 miles of a nuclear incident when it occurs. It is not a buy for the general public.

Shelf life of tablets is typically 6 or 7 years- so it's actually a normal buy here to replace tabs bought last in 2006 or 2007.

See http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/emerg-preparedness/about-emerg-preparedness/potassium-iodide/ki-faq.html

for more details.

No big deal.

Fukushima meltdown? Mystery steam rising over Reactor 3
Oliver Tickell

31st December 2013

Unexplained plumes of radioactive steam have been rising from Fukushima's Reactor Building 3, Could a major meltdown be on the way?

Fukushima's Reactor Building 3 exploded on 13th March 2011 as a result of a hydrogen buildup, breaching the building's containment and emitting a huge plume of radiation. The reactor itself is in meltdown.

And now fresh plumes of steam have been seen coming out the structure. These have now been confirmed by Tepco, the owner of the nuclear plant, from 19th December onwards. The company believes the steam is coming from the fifth floor of the building.

However it does not know the cause of the steam. Lethal levels of radiation and the physical damage to the structure have so far made entry and inspection impossible.
http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_round_up/2217953/fukushima_meltdown_mystery_steam_rising_over_reactor_3.html

When the disaster first happened, I jokingly said, "Well you can kiss Japan goodbye." That will probably prove to be an exaggeration and I hope so. Still, although this story has basically disappeared from the news, the catastrophe is far from over.

If the worst possible scenario happens those potassium iodide tablets may come in handy.

than need them and not have them. Nobody knows how the radiation plume heading toward the left coast from Fukushima will present itself, if seafood will become inedible or what.

My own guess is that children and pregnant women should probably avoid top of the chain seafood like tuna and swordfish (but not restricted to them) until the whole thing plays out and we have a better idea of what's happening.

All we do know is that they've consistently underestimated the amount of radiation flowing into the Pacific and that there seems to be no real end in sight.
