What your favorite drink says about your politics, in one chart

Former Mississippi governor and uber-Republican Haley Barbour loves bourbon. Franklin Roosevelt mixed martinis. And, as it turns out, those two partisans have something in common with their base voters: Consumer data suggests Democrats prefer clear spirits, while Republicans like their brown liquor.

Democratic drinkers are more likely to sip Absolut and Grey Goose vodkas, while Republican tipplers are more likely to savor Jim Beam, Canadian Club and Crown Royal. That research comes from consumer data supplied by GFK MRI, and analyzed by Jennifer Dube of National Media Research Planning and Placement, an Alexandria-based Republican consulting firm.

The results are fascinating: Analyzing voting habits of those who imbibe, Dube found that 14 of the top 15 brands that indicate someone is most likely to vote are wines.

If you see someone at your New Years party tonight drinking Kendall-Jackson or Robert Mondavi wines, that person is highly likely to vote, and they’re likely to vote Republican. Someone who savors a Chateau Ste. Michelle Merlot, one of Washington State’s top producers, or Smoking Loon, they’re likely to cast ballots for Democrats.

Interesting - and slightly distressing. Looks like a lot of the crowds my boys play to - skew red.

Jagermeister, Captain Morgan. At least, with the exception of Jack Daniels, they're below the line where the low-turnout voters are. Jack Daniels is very near the line, though.

My favorite gin and I am a very high turnout voter. Put a Democratic candidate for dog catcher and I will be out to vote.

I will be drinking my gin and tonic made with Tanqueray when the new year rolls in. Hope we don't have too much gunfire.

I didn't drink Dos Equis

But really when I did drink I loved Seagram's VO, or White Russians so Kahlua (I love coffee), and Bud Ice in the bottle only, however I drank what ever was in front of me then and I was a Dem voted in most elections (see below).

Today I don't drink and still vote in most elections (I've missed one or two elections in my life time but mostly due to moving), and I vote Dem.

I must be the anomaly

And it's not really a drink. But I would like to see the weed/beer chart.

But it is fascinating that more-likely-to-vote correlates with wine...on both sides.

I don't like wine, rarely drink it. My real favorite is Crown Royal which apparently makes me a Republican who probably won't show up for a midterm. Go figger.

That stuff is expensive. I don't buy it. The only brands I purchase are the Columbia valley wines listed at the top of the chart.
The lack of attention to beer drinkers is annoying.

Edit: I see Svedka under non-voters. I buy Svedka and I vote.

would be enjoyed by lots of people who don't regularly vote as well, given that only half the country turns out. Plus, vodka is more popular among younger people (who are not known for regularly turning out) than wine.
