Found this story from a Baltimore resident's political blog: "Sidewalk Messages Stir Controversy At Towson University":
At Towson University, students use chalk to write messages or promote events on campus sidewalks, but a recent chalking by one group is raising eyebrows because it has divided students. On Thursday, students gathered for a forum on campus to discuss their thoughts and concerns about the messages.
"I came from one of the roughest neighborhoods in Baltimore, and to come all the way to Towson University and feel like this is the most insecure, unstable environment because I see things like white (pride)," said Ignacio Evans.
Dressed in a white T-shirt with the Confederate flag on the front, Matt Heimbach spoke on behalf of the student group Youth For Western Civilization, which has claimed responsibility for the ubiquitous messages.
WHOA! It's really telling when a group like Youth for Western Civilization has to make that point. Not surprising given that they are soft on South African apartheid and radically oppose multiculturalism and immigration. It's a shame that people can hold such views and still be accepted to college.

(3,469 posts)I did not expect this at Towson. Nothing like that when I was there.

(23,664 posts)I don't think the campus is necessarily "divided" over this kind of crap. I'll bet that 99% of the white students think that "Youth for Western Civilization" are a bunch of pathetic assholes.
But it's still dangerous because who will they go after next?
Unless that campus has changed a LOT since I was there, I can't imagine many white students at Towson liking this shit either. It has always been a fairly progressive school in a progressive area.

(7,093 posts)I think the confusion comes from the headline itself, it stirs 'negativity or fear'. It is a great topic of conversation and the story seems to have perhaps a positive outcome; the conversation has started.
