President Obama Impresses a Republican

I just had a discussion with one of my employees about a client of ours she is working with. Our client, an avowed, lifelong Republican, had an opportunity in the past few days to meet with President Obama on an issue he is very involved in. He told her that he was blown away by the President, his grasp of the issue at hand and his ability to communicate with great authority on the subject. The topic of the discussion was just a small part of what President Obama has on his plate and yet he took the time to listen, understand and engage in thoughtful discussion. He may have only picked up one Republican vote in the process but it is clear that his willingness to talk to people from either party about any issue is making a difference.

I'm not sure it is an overwhelming endorsement of Obama to say he is in close agreement with a "life long republican". Since we don't know what the issue is, that could be the worst outcome possible.

But your larger hope has been detected in the body politic. Alot of moderate republicans are already convinced to vote for Obama in the upcoming general. The GOP has put up such a collection of idiots, even republicans can see that Obama is the better candidate.

I disagree with those who want/expect a version of Bush for the left, ram through everything & damn those who see it differently. So many claim he's "weak" or a "sell-out". I think he's an honest broker who tries to give all sides a fair hearing and tries to achieve middle ground as best he can.

Apparently such efforts by the President are not lost on all at least, even if it is those on the other side that actually see it & appreciate it.

but I have no illusion that he is a FDR or even wellstone democrat. I believe he is more reaganesk than anything. When you're adopting a healthcare plan that looks more like romney's and the heritage foundation, I'd say some republicans would have more in common with the president.

No, I don't think he's weak; I consider him a "new democrat", code word for once a pro-business moderate republican.

oh, and you don't have to worry about him being a "bush" for the left (whatever that means. I'd say after some of his cabinet choices (especially for the economy), he's sure to be maintaining the status quo.
