Their plan is to keep the government closed until the debt limit vote comes due. That should be sometime around the middle of this month.
In the meantime, they will pass piecemeal legislation to open parks and national landmarks, in order not to anger too many voters.
They know that Democrats and the President respect government more than they do. In the meantime, they will call this a government "slowdown", not a "shutdown".
They believe that if they threaten to not increase the debt limit, the Democrats will finally break. They believe they can still get concessions from the Democrats and the President. They have not given up on their efforts to repeal Obamacare and the debt limit vote will give them one more opportunity.
Because of the anger and because of the lack of leadership, the Republicans will not vote to stop the government shutdown anytime soon. This shutdown is only the warm-up until the main event.
Get your hotdogs and popcorn because this is going to be a long battle.
** This is just my opinion. Give it as much weight as you deem worthy.**

(111,110 posts)Tough call. I would be inclined to vote with them one time and then, if something else came up that they needed to "piecemeal", I would point out who is calling the shots on the shutdown? They can open it anytime they want...

(111,110 posts)??

(8,361 posts)It takes pressure off of GOP during shutdown.
kentuck
(111,110 posts)Could they make that point?
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)Those clearly need to be a part of the whole CR package. Otherwise GOP has no incentive to reopen other parts of government.
Aside from that, GOP are batshit crazy and being led along by a Cuban-Canadian nutjob, Cruz. No conference and no compromise. Put senate CR to up or down vote. That is all.

(111,110 posts)People were complaining that they could not see the Canyon as they had planned. Repubs did not want these people angry at them.
So, what you are saying, it would be OK if they angry at the Democrats??
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)Even if they do pass small CR bills to only cover things like national parks. Americans will be told repeatedly by PBO and Dems that GOP is engaged in more game playing.
Result--Repubs will still be blamed when Jimmy can't go to the Smithsonian.
kentuck
(111,110 posts)the Democrats do not block the vote?? I don't understand your logic?
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)this all rests with Repukes not following through on agreed compromise budget number and refusing to pass a clean, unfucked with full CR. Jimmy may not understand, but his dad and mom might. Even if they are rethugs themselves they might understand if you break it down into small words.

(21,475 posts)It will be a clean CR or nothing....

(111,110 posts)Repubs could say they wanted to open up Grand Canyon for the tourists but the Democrats shut it down, just like they shut down the government? Is that the argument that we would like to give the Repubs?
Or the Democrats could show the American people who was holding the key to the government "shutdown" by pointing out who suggested opening the parks? And that if they really wanted, they could also stop the government shutdown... All they have to do is ask, so long as they put their guns back in their holsters. America does not like to have guns pointed at her head...
Bandit
(21,475 posts)Accept ONLY a clean CR and then let's talk about Budget matters....This is not the time or the method to do the business of the government. Fund the Government for the next two months and then begin the Negotiations..Don't negotiate with a gun to your head.
kentuck
(111,110 posts)I would agree with that. Thanks!
I just think this battle is far from over.

(11,461 posts)and they have shown that on numerous occasions.
They're good at reneging on deals so how do you trust a party that
constantly renege on deals?
