Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs this a fraudulent website intended to draw people away from the REAL
Covered California site? http://www.coveredcalifornia.com/
Here's the real site: https://www.coveredca.com/
Who do I contact about this obvious attempt to confuse people and keep them from getting coverage??
ETA: The reason I ask is that the logo is completely different.

(146,218 posts)I heard a story on this the other day. They are trying to get the word out about this, but I'm not sure how successful the project is join.
I posted about it in the California group, but I think it's good that you are giving it more exposure here.

(5,937 posts)what the exchanges will do for you, or you can do for yourself. They are counting on confusing people, yes, but only to scame them. I have been wanting my agency to warn clients of scams but they have not really taken the issue up yet. So many things can go wrong here and federal and state agencies need to be on top of this yesterday.
Some using the language of the ACA as well as images to make it look official and may have you paying for basically junk, making you think you are getting insurance. The elderly are very susceptible as this has been going on with other services, medicare etc.

Covered Californias Deputy Director of Communications Dana Howard spoke at a New America Media press briefing in Los Angeles to explained various topics about Covered California to the press.
One of his talking points included a warning about a particular website that has an almost similar web address to Covered California (whose actual address is www.CoveredCA.com).
This particular phishing website that Howard talked about is www.CoveredCalifornia.com. He said that it is very easy to mistake the wrong address for the Covered Californias real web address.
Howard reminded people that CoveredCA.com is the only genuine website where people can get trusted assistance and information about Covered California.
...
Howard claimed that if anyone attempts to submit their email address to this website, their email inbox will be flooded with spam mail within the hour.

(15,805 posts)My ins, Kaiser is on the Calif exchange, and warned about the rise in fraudulent websites across the country designed to confuse and defraud people who are expecting to sign up for healthcare and end up giving their personal info to con men.
http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Stories/2013/September/12/lookalike-exchange-websites.aspx
If that isn't bad enough, there are also bogus "navigators" that con consumers out of an enrollment fee and tell them that they are required to provide bank-account, Social Security and credit-card information to enroll in Obamacare.

I don't know if these are just the latest opportunistic phishing scams, or if it's something more reprehensible and is politically motivated to make the exchanges look bad to feed the rightwing anti-Obama hysteria. Whichever, the culprits who are scamming people trying to get healthcare, are soulless criminals.
