Maybe Democrats should agree to come in a bit earlier than usual on the 1st, and when they are all inside, they should bar the doors and refuse to let Republicans onto the floor of the Senate or House. Start playing by these yahoos' rules. Let them obstruct the driveway if they like, but tell them in no uncertain terms they aren't coming in the door until they agree to stop threatening the US government like petulant babies. And if they can't do that, then tell them they have effectively dissolved the union between the states of the United States. Because what they are doing is a form of secession which should be responded to forcefully particularly since it is coming from regions of the country which have a previous history of challenging federal authority.
Also, account for every penny spent by those who want to shut their government down, let everyone know down to the penny who authorized spending, what it got spent for and who the biggest porkers are. For any who voted to defund the government, vote to permanently defund all projects in their states simultaneously.
Be loud and brutally blunt -- confront them head-on. Put up barricades. Let C-Span show Democrats storming the floor, let the public see fist thumping speeches, a time line with charts and reminders rehashing 25 years of GOP outrages. Ask the American people to take a stand. Like the siege at Wounded Knee. Or the Alamo. First you get their attention. You frame the drama. You create a real scene they can't ignore. Tit for f**king tat. You don't become American heroes by twiddling your thumbs. You outfox the crazies at their own game.
I wouldn't even mind the losing if I knew we put up a real down and dirty fight.

(5,917 posts)if your constituents (or the people that pay you) want you to stop everything then that is your job so by doing nothing they are doing the job theyre paid to do. therefore they aren't refusing to do their job.
