I need some clarification on "Made in America"

Can someone set me straight on this. It is my understanding that if a product is identified as "Made in America" it means that the thing was assembled in the United States with parts which were produced in the United States. It is also my understanding that if the thing was assembled in the United States but with parts that were made beyond our borders that the thing would have to be identified as "Assembled in the United States" and possibly with words to the effect that it was made with parts from elsewhere.

Is my understanding correct and if not can you tell me what if any markings are required by law and under what circumstances?

There is no one really watching, so a manufacturer "could" do whatever they wish.

I have seen stuff made overseas marked "Made in USA" There is a lot to it, if you are trying to be legitimate about it.

I worked for a distributor for a US manufacturer of hospital communications equipment. One of our customers was VA hospitals. The requirement for all our contracts was all equipment be "made in the USA". Now the manufacturer was international and most equipment was made either here or Canada.
Most of the jobs I worked on the equipment was inspected on delivery for "made in the USA" label. A close inspection of some of the boxes revealed the label was placed ove one that said "made in Canada".

I had seen the same with three different manufacturers.

by corporations, both foreign and domestic, if you dare ask or tell people where a product was made or where it is from, or ask what is in it or where ingredients are from, as that will be discriminating against foreign corporations. bet on it.
