44. Oh good Lord
Wed Sep 4, 2013, 08:13 PM
Sep 2013

Why is it that once a week we get someone who decides it's time for a Loyalty Test? Why can't we stand with other Democrats? Democrats like Alan Grayson who is without a doubt a Democrat? Why must someone always come here and insist that any Democrats must line up behind someone who is doing something we don't like? Are we next going to be called upon to line up behind Filner of San Diego? Are all good Democrats going to have to line up and support Anthony Weiner?

I stand with Alan Grayson, Democratic Congressman of Florida. I stand with Hank Johnson, Democratic Congressman from Georgia. Both of who have spoken out against this action in Syria. I may stand with Elizabeth Warren, and I may stand with others, if they stand with principles and ideals I stand with.

45. If you insist on playing this pathetic little game of straw men and false choices . . .
Wed Sep 4, 2013, 08:25 PM
Sep 2013

. . . then one could just as easily pose this question to you:

Do you stand with the leader of the Democratic Party because you support, in principle, war in Syria, permanent tax cuts for the wealthy, a switch to a chained-CPI basis for calculating Social Security benefit increases, the killing of innocents with the use of drones, the assassination of a 16-year-old American kid because of the actions of his terrorist father with no due process whatsoever, an unprecedented war on whistleblowers, etc., or do you support him merely because he is the Democratic Party?

There, see how easy it is to play this sophomoric game of logical fallacies?

We are truly living in interesting times. There is even a DUer who claims the ONLY injury possible to ANY American if we attack Syria is a paper cut to be suffered filling out "after-action reports". Forget that Incirlik Air Base in Turkey is within range of hundreds of Syrian missiles.

What is this, some kind of loyalty oath? Should we follow like good little sheep to our own slaughter? Are you serious?

We have a president that many of us worked very hard to get elected. FACT. That president has chosen to allow the NSA to spy on us wholesale. FACT. That president has lied on national television about the spying. FACT. That president has pardoned Bush and his cronies for war crimes. FACT. That president is working on a secret pact, TPP, which will effectively hand this country over to the corporations.
FACT. That president is now poised to start a THIRD war when the people at home, the ones who pay for the war, cannot afford to feed or house themselves.

Paul doesn't have a thing to do with it. Are you ready to trust this president anymore, at this point?

I'm not.

Al-Qaeda-linked Syria rebels target Christian village

U.S. Senate panel votes to give Obama authority to use military force against Syria

Al-Qaeda-linked rebels have launched an assault on a regime-held Christian village in the densely populated west of Syria and new clashes erupted near the capital, Damascus — part of a brutal battle of attrition each side believes it can win despite more than two years of deadlock.

As the world focused on possible U.S. military action against Syria, rebels commandeered a mountaintop hotel in the village of Maaloula and shelled the community below Wednesday, said a nun, speaking by phone from a convent in the village. She spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Thu Sep 5, 2013, 05:03 PM
Sep 2013

think they are opposing him on this in their own, the country's, and ultimately his administration's best interests.

Just maybe, you know?

If we were to attack Syria, and it were to go sour, this administration would be deeply and forever tarnished.

People don't oppose the president for his moral position in this. They are looking at this pragmatically. There is widespread agreement that the use of chemical weapons is a war crime.

There are three basic parts of any tenable theory of just war:
1) The cause must be just,
2) Success must be obtainable, and by "success" it is meant that the cause of the war will be removed.
3) If you make war, you must wage it in such a way that you believe that you will succeed and that you will remove the cause.

Anybody who stops and thinks about the situation has to realize that 2 and 3 are the problems here, and would probably commit us to sending troops in if we are serious.

The reality of this thing is that since the military strategists don't think we can take out the chemical weapons without putting a lot of troops in this country, if we start a limited bombing campaign we may well be making this worse. If we weaken Assad and the rebellion gains, he may use them anyway. After all, he and his regime are going to be slaughtered if they lose. They're desperate.

If we go in and grab them, that removes one problem if we get them all (doubtful).

If we don't go in and the rebels win, then some highly unsavory people are going to get this stuff and who knows where it ends up?
