Well played, military industrial complex. Well played.

And they ARE spying illegally. And I will NOT shut up about it.

(10,291 posts)and I am noticing how the kabuki theatre is being set again.
John Kerry sounded like the Bush Administration today. That's not because I want it to be true, it is because he actually sounded like Bush today.

Yeah, well played. Well played indeed.

(28,749 posts)I just don't see the connection.
~1,400 people died, and died of chemical weapons from someone... it is a big story. Snowden is still a big story and if you search Google you can see that many news outlets are still reporting about him just as much, I did a Google screen capture just so you could see it:
I don't think Snowden is off the radar but I do think many Americans just don't care, out of my four (very liberal) immediate family members I am the only who cares about Snowden. I actually agree about watching Kerry today, it felt like watching Powell make the case to the U.N. very eerie feeling if you ask me.

(10,291 posts)Snowden was the messenger, not the culprit.

(28,749 posts)Even at the beginning.
Sometimes I feel like DU is very disconnected from the rest of the world. The NSA is just not a story to many people, even people who were paying attention. I don't agree, I don't think it is right but trust me many people outside of DU just don't care. That is why the story is gone...
Heck by the argument you are making the entire city of Boston has had the wool pulled over their eyes by Aaron Hernandez, it's the lead on every news show every night, and has been for weeks. I don't think the MIC is behind him committing murder but it sure does see like it, huh?
LaydeeBug
(10,291 posts)GG and ES are the panache, they're not the *substance* of this.
My logic is not flawed regarding your comparison to Boston. That's a false equivalent. Celebrities make news.
If it leads, it bleeds, and that guy covers those two 'juicy' categories. His story sells papers.
The news TELLS THE TRUTH. And they've not told us the truth about this NSA thing from jump. People started realizing that, and...
Oh, look, there's a dictator. He gassed his people. Or the rebels did. Oh well, let's throw the inspectors out and claim we are bringing freedom. Or answering a call. For freedom. Or something.
And while i don't think the gassing was staged, john Kerry's speech sounded like the Bush admin (Colin Powell at the UN) It was almost like one was an opera buffa and the other was a soliloquy, but it smacked of theatre all the same. (Read: they don't give a shit. We're bombing them)

(2,392 posts)that the notion of US officials acting in good faith is very hard to believe. The connection between the two issues is the ease in which US officials abuse their power to manipulate the public.
Even if there had been real proof Iraq had WMD that wouldn't have been sufficient to justify an invasion/occupation. That was the false choice intended by the propaganda. Either you wanted the US to get attacked with Iraqi WMD and you thought Hussein was a great guy or you supported invasion, regime change and occupation.
Even if Assad ordered chemical attacks that doesn't justify US intervention. People opposed to intervention aren't advocates of chemical attacks on civilians. Nor do they think Assad is a good guy. The issue is that there are better ways of dealing with this than having the US intervene militarily and make the situation even worse.
