Two-year-old Vivian Wilson has a rare form of epilepsy that ravages her body with seizures so severe she is unable to function, and could prove fatal. In other states with medical marijuana laws, young children with Dravets Syndrome have seen their life transformed by a strain of medical marijuana that curbed the seizures like no other treatment, and with fewer debilitating side effects.
But New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is sitting on a bill that would give Vivian and other minors access to the treatment. And on Wednesday, Vivians father Brian Wilson confronted him on the matter: Please dont let my daughter die, Governor, Brian Wilson told him during a meet-and-greet at a local diner. These are complicated issues, Christie responded. But he committed to make a decision on whether to sign the bill by Friday.
New Jersey is already among the 20 states with medical marijuana laws, but it contains stringent limits for minors. A bill passed by the state legislature about two months ago would ease access to the drug for minors with conditions like Vivians, by permitting access to edible forms of marijuana, which are the only mechanism for consumption for a young child; and lifting a provision that allows only three strains of marijuana for medical consumption. The bill would also lower the number of required doctor recommendations from 3 to 1.
In a CNN documentary that aired Sunday, Colorado parents explained the battle they endured trying to find two doctors who would sign off on marijuana for their young child, and in finding a source to supply a special rare strain of marijuana that is low in the psychoactive component of marijuana, THC, and high in another component believed to alleviate seizures, CBD. But while they were limited by logistical obstacles and the federal prohibition on marijuana use for any purpose, Colorados medical marijuana bill permitted them access to the strain they needed, in edible form.

(12,081 posts)his daughter medicine whether the government approves of it or not. Why has the medical marijuana movement been so successful? Because patients are already dying and already suffering and don't give a damn what the government thinks about their use of medical marijuana. It is this defiance that has made it unstoppable.

(12,608 posts)You don't want to do anything illegal but when it comes to your child in this case. There is no right or wrong

(15,189 posts)Fuck the law. If he can, he should move. Crisco is probably not going to sign this. If this man knows someone who is in a legal state, then have them mail you some cannabis oil. No return address, and NO signature required. Fuck them.

(45,358 posts)It would involve transporting a schedule I drug from a LEGAL dispensary over state lines. Both parties at risk of federal prosecution.
Christie needs to sign the bill tomorrow and encourage all states to do the same immediately.

(15,189 posts)But his daughters life depends on it. She also depends on her father, but it's ridiculous to sit back and watch her die. I would risk it if it were me. If I had to get a residence in NY I would, then get my own recommendation. ANY surgery from years gone by will work, or lack of sleep, pain. You don't need a regular doctor to fuck it up for you.

(14,923 posts)THC were removed from the cannabis plant strain,...leaving only a high component of CBD's (which are believed to alleviate seizures), why would such a plant be labeled illegal?
tridim
(45,358 posts)And high-CBD strains have about 10 times the CBD as the average THC/CBD strain.
I don't think any plant should be illegal.

(4,238 posts)Dravet Syndrome. It's heart-breaking. He's been a tireless advocate for medical marijuana. It's amazing what that plant has done for his son. He went from 22 pills/day down to TWO. While still not out of the woods, he's a completely different child than the catatonic, stoned (yes, STONED) little boy he used to be on those toxic prescription pills. He's changed the minds of not only our whole family, but members of our extended community (most quite conservative) who have witnessed these developments.
