That's a fine plan. We need more of it.

4. Pricing can't be beat, but there's room for improvement

We live about a three minute drive up the street from one and the savings over Albertsons or Fred Meyer can be significant. It's bag your own groceries, no big deal. The meat and produce is unfortunately not always up to par. The joke in our house is the potatoes and onions have been used as softballs. We tend to divide our shopping and get the basics at Winco and produce at the local stand in season and Freddies or Albertsons in winter.

edit to add -Being the low-cost grocer, they do attract folks depending on food stamps. We have noticed that they jack up prices considerably prior to food stamp day and then drop them afterwards. Pretty sad.

In Nashville.. Basically the same business model.

Decent stuff cheap if you don't mind doing most of the work.

10. WinCo and Aldi

use some of the same business model, but nobody who has been to both stores would ever really consider them to be similar. You could fit at least 4 Aldi stores inside of a WinCo store.

Most of the time I get staples there but the produce is usually very nice. Canned goods and dairy products are cheaper and the quality is good. I don't mind bagging my things myself. I actually prefer doing that so I can sort things based on where they're going when I get them home.

I have been to stores in ID, WA, and UT and they are all well managed it appears. I think their produce is excellent and I like the bulk sections for dry goods. I think their meats are good with the exception of steaks. I have never had a great steak from there. Good selection of frozen seafood. Not many organic choices however. They dont sell clothes, sporting goods, electronics, or hardware but that is ok.

8. They have them in the Portland, Oregon area

And my 80 year old mother loves them. While their selections of Northwest beer and wine is rather limited, nobody beats their prices. Friendly folks, great quality, I just wish we had them in NY! No tracking discount cards, either, what you see on the shelf is what you pay, no surrendering your identity for a few cents off (my mother really likes that, she's a bit paranoid!)

in my area. I shopped at one a few times while in Arizona. I don't remember all that much about the quality of the produce and meat, I thought it looked ok to me, but the only meat we bought were chicken thighs. I liked the bulk foods section. Who knew you could buy Cheetos in bulk?

I believe some of the founders are former SuperValu executives.

I shop there infrequently because I mainly buy groceries at our BelAir. However, I should reconsider buying more stuff from them.

Definitely my favorite place to buy food! It's very unglamorous, but the prices are really great, and they have a huge selection, and are open 24 hours.

the first one opened about four miles away, in an old Costco. They remodeled the place and it looks great. The store inside is immaculately clean. The prices are excellent.
