Clarence Thomas Can Breathe a Sigh of Relief at Weiner Downfall
By earl ofari hutchinson
"Every Democrat from the White House down screamed loudly for New York Representative Anthony Weiner to resign, and he finally did. But its not a Democrat thats breathing the biggest sigh of relief at Weiners downfall. Its Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. There was much talk a year ago that Weiner would be the pointman on the House Judiciary Committee if it decided to go after Thomas for his long trail of financial manipulations, abuse, and duplicity. Weiner gave some hope that hed be the go-to guy against Thomas because he had been hammering him publicly for his dealings and demanding that he recuse himself from any high court deliberations and ruling on the constitutionality of the health care reform law that conservatives loathe.
Weiner certainly had a lot of ammunition to make Thomass misdoings a prima facie legal and political embarrassment for the GOP. This stemmed from Thomass wife Ginnis mini-kings ransom earnings, which she received from assorted right-wing foundations and think tanks. The Heritage Foundation was a prominent funder of Ginni Thomas, as were the ultraconservative Koch brothers, the Coors family and Richard Mellon Scaife, all of whom have a major interest in any number of Supreme Court rulings.
Thomas did disclose her earnings. He did not disclose the speaking fees and perks he got from a bevy of the same conservative groups that his wife worked for and had close political ties to. And then he refused to acknowledge her involvement with Liberty Central."

<snip>
Wednsday night I was enjoying Lawrence O'Donnell. He was pointing out some things about the NYC papers turning on Anthony Weiner - so far as they had never called for Rudy Giuliani to resign during his sex scandals, which were further reaching than Weiners.
So I tuned in on Thursday night, but to my surprise - Lawrence wasn't on the air. Instead, I was "treated" to a tag team hit piece on Weiner with Chris Hayes and Alex Wagner that took up the better part of half the show. Chris Hayes could think of "20 reasons why Weiner shouldn't be Mayor besides the sexting". And Wagner interviewed an "expert" I had never heard of before on "sexting addiction". Watching these two corporate toadies sucking up was enough to make me vomit.
Funny that when Weiner is discussed, not one mention is made of how he was going after CLARENCE THOMAS when he was Breitbarted. And, to be honest, seeing otherwise sane democrats CARRY ON DEAD BRIETBARTS WORK FOR HIM by continuing to attack a real progressive is disheartening.
Here is a sample of why Third Wayers and the Far Right as well want Weiner to disappear -
<snip>
He received a 100% rating from the NARAL Pro-Choice America in 2003 and a 0% rating from National Right to Life Committee 2006, indicating a strong pro-choice voting record. He was critical of the 2009 Stupak-Pitts Amendment to the health reform bill, calling it "unnecessary and divisive" and saying it would prevent health insurers from offering abortion coverage regardless of whether an individual uses federal funds to purchase an insurance plan.
In April 2008, Weiner created the bi-partisan Congressional Middle Class Caucus. Weiner received an "A" on the Drum Major Institute's 2005 Congressional Scorecard on middle-class issues.
In June 2008, Weiner sponsored a bill that would increase the number of O-visas available to foreign fashion models, arguing that it would help boost the fashion industry in New York City. Weiner has criticized UN diplomats for failing to pay parking tickets in New York City, claiming foreign nations owed $18,000,000 to the city.
During the health care reform debates of 2009, Weiner advocated for a bill called the United States National Health Care Act, which would have expanded Medicare to all Americans, regardless of age. He remarked that while 4% of Medicare funds go to overhead, private insurers put 30% of their customer's money into profits and overhead instead of into health care. In late July 2009, Weiner secured a full House floor vote for single payer health care in exchange for not amending America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 (AAHCA) in Committee mark-up with a single-payer plan. When a public health insurance option was being considered as part of America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, he said it would help towards reducing costs, and set up a website to push for the option. He attracted wide attention when described the Republican Party as "a wholly owned subsidiary of the insurance industry, teaming up with a small group of Democrats to try to protect that industry", and proclaimed in front of Congress in February 2010 that "every single Republican I have ever met in my entire life is a wholly owned subsidiary of the insurance industry."
He was the chief sponsor of the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act (PACT) of 2009, which makes the selling of tobacco in violation of any state tax law a federal felony, and effectively ends Internet tobacco smuggling by stopping shipments of cigarettes through the United States Postal Service. Weiner said, "This new law will give states and localities a major revenue boost by cracking down on the illegal sale of tobacco", and added that "Every day we delay is another day that New York loses significant amounts of tax revenue and kids have easy access to tobacco products sold over the Internet."
On July 29, 2010, Weiner criticized Republicans for opposing the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. This act would provide for funds for sick first responders to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, many of whom reside in Weiner's district. In a speech on the floor of the House, he accused Republicans of hiding behind procedural questions as an excuse to vote against the bill.
In October 2010, Weiner urged YouTube to take down Anwar al-Awlaki's videos from its website, saying that by hosting al-Awlaki's messages, "We are facilitating the recruitment of homegrown terror." In November 2010, YouTube removed from its site some of the hundreds of videos featuring al-Awlaki's calls to jihad.
Weiner voted against the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010. He said the Republicans turned out to be "better poker players" than Obama."

So, there it is. It is perfectly clear to me now why the Third Way bluedogs jumped on the Breitbart crazy train. Those 1%er Democrats are quite uncomfortable with anything or anyone who might shrink their big fat stock portfolios.
So, it really is up to the people of New York City. Are you so obsessed over some pics that went out on the internet that you will put another stuffed shirt Third Wayer in office, instead of a real progressive who had the guts to go after big time corruption?
Your call, Big Apple.

(894 posts)and not the sexting itself that is throwing people off. (and i mean that in a more general sense than just the people here), everyone sexts (not literally everyone), that's not a big deal. And funnily enough, i think he refrained from doing stuff in person b/c he didn't want to cheat, so in that regard i think it makes him a more decent human being and even a better husband as strange as that may sound.
it's something else, i still am having trouble putting a finger on it.
I'm frustrated b/c he would have been a good mayor i think. Gosh, i just can't put a finger on why so many people are just tired of his bs but i know i am. Is it his being juvenile, is it his acting squirmy when he's busted, i am just not quite sure.
and you can tell by the visceral reaction so many people are having, when we have barely batted an eyelash and so many cheaters, (not here, i dunno what's up with here, but a lot of dem women on my face book are having the reaaction when they forgave Clinton and others).
although regarding the "bashers" here, once people start disliking someone here it turns into scathing hate pretty fast, so it goes both way, that doesn't just apply to weiner.
i think he's probably a decent guy, his politics are fine, it's something else related to the whole drama that's turning people off. Dunno.
and maybe it's that we actually been exposed to his texts and junk, maybe it's the strange way he denies it. When i think about it out of context, i have no issues at all. Sexting, big deal, whatever, sexting while married, still whatever...its something else. He acts weak, juvenile, something.

He thought with the wrong head not once but several times...and opened himself up not just for ridicule but possible blackmail. His personal life and libido have no bearing here but when he displays behavior that not only is risky for someone in such a high profile situation but repeats that behavior after being disgraced, it makes one think he's got some major character flaws that would affect his job performance...

Monsanto Likely to Score Supreme Court Win with Far-Reaching Benefits for Corporate Farming
Why a legal dispute over soybeans could be a major win for corporate food producers.
On Feb. 19, 2013, the Supreme Court heard yet another Monsanto case. (And yet again, Justice Clarence Thomas, former lawyer for Monsanto, did not recuse himself.) This time around, it was Monsanto vs. Vernon Hugh Bowman, an Indiana soybean and wheat farmer.

As a congressman, Anthony Weiner was a spectacularly ineffective buffoon. A recent New York Times review of his tenure in the House paints a devastating portrait: Weiner was megalomaniacal, narcissistic, bad at navigating the political ropes, alienating to potential allies, alarmingly disinterested in making actual change and really, really mean to his staff (one former aide likened him to Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada). In his twelve-plus years in Congress, the Times notes, Weiner sponsored and wrote only one bill that he steered to enactment: a measure pushed by a family friend who gave his campaigns tens of thousands of dollars in donations. When Democrats controlled Congress in 200708, Weiner introduced fifty bills but didnt get so much as a cosponsor on thirty-nine of them. According to a former staffer quoted by the Times, He just never tried . The point was to be able to say he introduced a bill. Yes, Weiner squawked loudly about single-payer healthcare, but his interest in it always smacked of grandstanding opportunism. When the ACA finally came up for a vote, Weiner threatened to hold it up in committee unless he could introduce a single-payer amendmenta noble cause, which he bartered away not for any policy concessions but for a primetime speaking slot and a letter of recommendation from Nancy Pelosi.
And thats just his record on domestic issues. When it comes to foreign policy, Weiner can give Liz Cheney a run for her money. He was one of eighty-two Democrats who voted for the Iraq War, and he continued to support its funding long after its flimsy rationale had evaporated. But its on the subject of Israel/Palestine that Weiner truly distinguishes himself. At least twice in public, he has insisted that the West Bank is not occupied, denying a fact that even right-wing former Israeli Prime Minister and settler movement architect Ariel Sharon admitted a decade ago (for a complete account and video of Weiners statements, see Ali Gharibs report for The Daily Beast). He has also claimed that there is no Israeli military presence in the West Bank, which would be news to the IDF soldiers stationed there. As Stephen Zunes points out, Weiners denial fits squarely in a disturbing pattern of squelching criticism of the Israeli state and of making patently untrue statements to do so, including claiming that the United States recognizes the PLO as a terrorist organization twenty years after it ceased using that designation. These statements reveal Weiner to be a knowing liar or a willfully ignorant ideologue, either of which should disqualify him from holding public office.

(27,787 posts)Its this phrase ...
going after CLARENCE THOMAS when he was Breitbarted.
I'd suggest that saying some one has been "Breitbarted" generally means having a news story created about you in which your words or actions are misquoted, selectively edited, or even altered so as to create a scandal where none should exist.
That's not what happened here. Its not like some one misquoted Weiner. Nor did they selectively edit or alter the images of his wee-wee.
He actually did the thing they said he did. Then when asked about it, he lied and claimed some one was setting him up (which would count as being Breitbarted). And then, he had to come clean and say "yes" I did do it.
A scandal wasn't manufactured out of nothing. Weiner had actually done what they claimed.
Then he promised to never do it again.
But he kept doing it.
Now he's running again. And he had to tell us he had kept doing it because that fact was going to be exposed, again.
Weiner created this situation.
Maybe the people of NY will forgive him, maybe not. But if anyone hurt the liberal agenda here, its Weiner himself.

Breitbart.com Trumpets Story Based on 2011 Weiner Sexting As If It Happened in 2013; Whisks Away Post With No Correction
Filed under: General Patterico @ 7:59 am
Breitbart.com published a piece yesterday that announced that Anthony Weiner was sexting Lisa Weiss in March 2013, based on messages that were actually sent in 2011.
Then Breitbart.com whisked away the post with no acknowledgement of error.
The proof remains at Weasel Zippers, which quoted the now-disappeared Breitbart.com post in a post titled Carlos Danger Was Sexting With Another Woman Right Up Until He Announced His Run For NYC Mayor

So that is a year after he said he'd never do it again, he was still doing it.
Then, before coming clean, he starts his bid for mayor.
If he was smart, he'd have come clean about the additional year of sexting LONG before he started his run for mayor. He could have tied it to the original "mistake". Maybe said he and his wife worked through it.
The sense he created by not coming clean before starting his run is that he was trying to hide it. He did not want the voters to know.
Again, its his own actions that create the scandal. The fact that a right wing site would jump all over it doesn't relieve him of responsibility.

Sorry, but that's a problem. He'd been busted for this. He'd lied about it. Then he lied about having quit doing it, WHILE he was stilling doing it.
Now here we are again, forced to endure the details of, and the apologies for, what is at best an incredibly juvenile compulsion, which he ought to at the very least understand is not "private" when it's done with strangers over the Internet.
Whether it's sexual addiction or narcissism or something worse, the man has shown an inability to keep his personal sexual compulsions private. There's something wrong there.
If he's been lured by right-wingers into doing it, that doesn't really help his case. It just means he's so incredibly seized by this compulsion that he can't think rationally or critically enough to keep idiots from nailing him. That makes him a sub-idiot.
