kid's lunches ... Japan vs America

looks like fun ... lots of veggies

appeals to american kids tastes

I was in the food service field for 30 years before bailing. A rule to be observed was ... people eat with their eyes first. Although the Japanese bento box for kids has tons of eye appeal would american kids go for it?

I have no idea if this is typical lunch for Japanese kids. I merely saw a picture of bento boxes for kids and did a googlie search. I then looked for lunchables and school lunches.

Obviously the mother put a lot of effort into making it, but it is not typical. What is typical about children's lunches in Japan is that they do tend to be more balanced than today's American kid lunches.

Here are some pictures of typical Japanese school lunches. The 4th one from the left on the very top row is actually from France.

usually anywhere from 20% to 50% when it's past mealtime. There is one store in particular where, whenever I come in, the cashiers give me a "We've been expecting you" kind of look

reuseit.com and they have a nice section on Bento Boxes if you want to do the same for yourself

There was a thread earlier this year showing the typical school-provided lunches from around the world. Of course, the French had the best, yet their "kids" lunch looked like what an adult would eat, as is proper anyway.

Jamie Oliver and other chefs/food professionals have shown that kids here would go for healthier lunches, if we'd just implement those programs to begin with. Get the big junk-food corporations out of the schools, show kids how to grow their own, and change the whole paradigm.

cheese, veg, sliced meat, eggs, whatever may have been leftover dinner....it was a lot of work, but my daughter loved it...now it's completely uncool... Many times I would try to make sure that I made extra dinner for lunch the next day. That worked pretty well. I would get the box together after....sooooo much easier when you are not a morning person.

is long since dead, and Japan hasn't been involved in any war for nearly 70 years, right?

Or maybe you don't
