Has the war in Afghanistan contracted or expanded the presence of the Taliban?

It seems as though their presence was diminished for several years following the invasion. However, around 2007 or 2008, they began to grow in numbers and their insurgency brought their capability almost back to prewar levels.

Anybody have any papers or studies analyzing this?

Oh, easily expanded. Resistance to invasion is native to every culture. sbh Jul 2013 #1
I think we can safely chalk Afghanistan in the "Another Lost War" column. Tierra_y_Libertad Jul 2013 #2

Sorry, no papers or studies, but that's how we won US independence. Invasion drives resistance.
