Scientific progress was happening during the middle ages, but in different areas, such as farming and building techniques. You can't have the fall of a major empire and expect there not to be a pull back socially and technologically but it was not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. Many places in the world such as the middle east and the east move forward technologically and socially during the so called "Dark ages". Like most issues, the Middle Ages are far more complicated than anyone seems to realize.
