Gallagher's motivation does not seem to be pure homophobia. Rather, she has intellectualized a very painful personal episode in her life, and she blames the Libertine nature of our culture for her pain.
Maggie became a un-wed mother while at Yale, and the child's father coldly abandoned them. They would re-unite, but once the father coldly abandons them. As you read the article, you can tell that she still harbors pain from this.
Her crusade against ending discrimination against Gays boils down to the fact that more social liberation and more relaxtion from rigid cultural norms would result in more men coldly abandoning their children.
I don't agree with her position, and I find her reasoning hysterical. Every prohibitionist always seems to be projecting their internal personal conflicts and pain onto the world.
Those would seem to be the hard facts, the evidence on which pure thought would operate. But for Gallagher these facts are temporal, contingent and ultimately meaningless. They just appear to be facts. In an email two months after our first conversation, she explains why her opponents are mistaken: One of the lessons I learned as a young woman from the collapse of Communism is this: Trying to build a society around a fundamental lie about human nature can be done, for a while, with intense energy (and often at great cost); but it cannot hold.

(35,438 posts)If a rigid social structure were in place, her baby's daddy would not have abandoned them.
The end to discrimination against Gays and Lesbians further weakens the social structure.
IOW, people cannot handle freedom, and the more freedom you give them, the more society breaks down.
More simply put, it's the age old prohibitionist argument.
But if that rigid social structure were in place, wouldn't she be considered a pariah?
She did conveive out of wedlock, and she would be the one who would ostrasized from society!
You're right, same old argument.

(62,414 posts)It sounded to me like Maggie's vaunted intellectual logic breaks down and she just seems to hate gays.
Or so I gathered. Mrs. Lib talked all the way through the interview.

(27,275 posts)she seems like someone who is bitter about her own life experience, and she projects her bitterness and anger on "the other." she also seems like your typical "do as I say and not as I do" right-wing hypocrite. she never got over losing the father of her child, and she can't accept responsibility for her part in that loss. she's been immersed in conservative ideology her entire life, which served only to confirm what she already believed...and learned from her bad relationship. and...she's wrong. she thinks men need social restraints and controls in order to be decent human beings...i don't.
