Senator Cantwell Attacked By Challenger For Being Unmarried

http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/12/senator-cantwell-attacked-by-challenger-for-being-unmarried.php?ref=fpnewsfeed

From the department of inappropriate attacks, a challenger to Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) accused her of supporting access to Plan B for minors because she is not married.

In an email to supporters Thursday, State Sen. Michale Baumgartner, slammed Cantwell for her support of making Plan B available to minors — a policy recently supported by the FDA but overturned by the Obama administration. According to the Seattle Times, the email noted that Cantwell is unmarried and votes frequently - as the email put it - to “undermine the role of parents in child rearing.”

Last week, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius overrode a decision by the FDA to make Plan B available without a prescription to minors, questioning the judgment of minors who would be accessing it over-the-counter. Cantwell signed a letter with 13 other Senators asking Secretary Sebelius for a scientific justification for the decision.

A campaign consultant for Cantwell gave the following statement to the Times:

Maria Cantwell believes that the Plan B decision should be based on the best available science. Washington voters support protecting women’s health. You don’t need to be married to know that Baumgartner’s anti-choice position is out of touch.

That's what the republicans really don't like about it. Having a kid under seventeen terminate a possible pregnancy without consulting with their parents is a profound commentary on the failure of the parenting.

Does that mean Ms. Baumgartner is in favor of expanding union and worker rights, raising the minimum wage to a living wage, and pouring money into our dilapidated school system? Or does her concern extend only to fertilized eggs?

Or comments about her "wife" if he followed her to Washington.

And if she had children, they'd say she wasn't a good mother because she works too much.

Keep on keepin' on Maria. A woman can't win with that crowd unless she's a dried-up, hate-spouting (R) prune.
