(3,927 posts)probably the most important person in my life. She was my mother's mother. Mom & Dad could have been more supportive of this kid. My grandmother was my saving grace....she was the only one I absolutely knew loved me unequivocally and unconditionally. A family member sent me a black & white photo I'd never seen before -- she sent it about 5 years ago, which would have made me about 52 when I opened it up. I burst into tears when I saw it, I have a blow-up of it in the my living room and I carry a little copy with me all the time. It was me sitting in my grandmother lap facing her, she has an arm wrapped around me and the two of us appeared like we're in intense conversation with each other -- I was probably about 3. It was an incredibly intimate moment.
I adored her.
Sadly, she died of Alzheimer's disease when I was 15. It broke my heart but I went to see her frequently -- they lived in CT and we lived in NYC. I'd hop on the train and my grandfather would pick me up at the station an hour later. I was the only one of my siblings who did. She, who'd given me so much, deserved the same kind of unconditional, unequivocal love and attention in return. I wish we'd lived next door so I could have seen her daily.
Grandmothers are very, very special people! I'm really happy for you and happy for Lola that she has such an awesome grandmother!

(182,970 posts)DU saw my Josie come into life and now your child.
The five rules of the baby
1. Don't drop the baby
2. You can never give it too much love
3. Get on the floor with the baby
4. Nobody puts baby in a corner
5. DO NOT DROP THE BABY
Josie and I still crack up about that.
The first 3 months are the hardest part. White noise from a vacuum cleaner (if you don't have cats) or a dryer or a sound machine may not work. It can't talk to you yet so there is no telling why it is crying. Probably food or poop like other beings on this planet but sometimes there is no telling.

(9,124 posts)Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
You were begotten before all time,
and yet desired to become an infant in time.
You are delighted with the innocence of tender years.
You lovingly embraced the children
who were brought to You,
and blessed them.
In the blessings of Your sweetness,
go before this infant
and grant that no evil may mar its intellect.
Grant too that,
growing in age,
wisdom and grace,
it may ever be pleasing to You,
who live and are King and God
with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
for ever and ever.
Ramen.
(Then the priest sprinkles the infantwith holy water, saying
May the peace and blessing of almighty God,
the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
descend upon you and remain always.
Ramen.
Seriously:
Bless you and your family and this new chapter in your lives.
