clarification: by "Catholic" here I mean "Roman Catholic".
A "full Catholic" would agree with the Catholic church on every single issue. That is, all abortion is a sin, no contraception allowed except for the rhythm method, missing Mass is a serious sin, etc.

(71,265 posts)Not all catholics are in communion with the pope. Anglicans/Episcopalians are also catholic so I would say yes I am catholic.

(24,692 posts)It's the only kind of parish that we (and many others) can tolerate with its increased participation by women, a mandate of social justice for a percentage of our contributions and a wink and nod from the archdiocese which must understand that they would lose everyone in the parish if it cracked down.
My wife was born Catholic and it is very important to her. It has not been hard for me because the people here are so liberal and so critical of the church hierarchy. For their own personal reasons they all chosen to maintain their connection to the church despite their dissatisfaction as long as they are able to maintain their community as it is. With the shortage of priests growing there seems to be a consensus that if the parish has to close in the future, they will not attend other parishes.
on edit: I voted as a 'cafeteria Catholic' on behalf of all those people I go to church with even though I'm not a Catholic myself.

(21,925 posts)but when I was about 12 years old, a priest got really angry and nasty with me during confession and chewed me out for almost nothing. It seems the boy ahead of me in line was dying of cancer and nonetheless dragged himself to confession and the priest got emotionally upset on hearing his confession and then got very angry with me when I told him I'd missed confession on the last few Sundays. I realize now that he was just being emotional and human but at the time, after hearing him shout at me loudly through the confessional I decided to avoid confession and holy communion altogether. I never confirmed because of that incident and I went less and less to Mass and now I haven't been in years.
I deplore abortion but I think every woman who has one probably deplores it too and wishes she had an easier choice. I wouldn't want to force someone to have a child they don't want. I don't agree with the church on contraception or abortion or gay marriage but I still admire the beauty of Catholic ritual, the echo in the church, he tinkling of the bell, the smell of incense, the candles, and especially the way the mass was when I was a kid and the priest would sing in Latin.

(8,403 posts)but realized that since I didn't believe birth control was wrong, didn't believe the Pope was infallible, and didn't believe in praying to Mary, I probably wasn't really Catholic.
I am now Presbyterian, and attend a church that is an ecumenical church of Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and Lutherans.
