According to court documents obtained by Wonkette, conservative activist James O'Keefe has agreed to a $100,000 settlement in a lawsuit filed against him by Juan Carlos Vera, a former employee of ACORN. Vera filed the suit against O'Keefe in 2010, alleging O'Keefe had illegally taped their conversation at an ACORN office in California as part of his fraudulent "exposé" of the community activist group.
Vera was one of the ACORN employees portrayed in O'Keefe's videos as offering assistance in setting up a nonexistent child prostitution ring. After his encounter with O'Keefe, Vera contacted the police to report "possible human smuggling," unaware that he had been duped. Vera claims he lost his job as a result of O'Keefe's deception after the conservative's video of their encounter was posted on a Breitbart website.
According to the settlement documents obtained by Wonkette, O'Keefe has agreed to "pay Vera $100,000.00," and that "as part of this settlement O'Keefe states that at the time of the publication of the video of Juan Carlos Vera he was unaware of Vera's claims to have notified a police officer of the incident. O'Keefe regrets any pain suffered by Mr. Vera or his family."
After the ACORN prostitution hoax fell apart, O'Keefe and his Project Veritas group released a series of heavily edited undercover sting videos attempting to document voter fraud, most of which collapsed under scrutiny, sometimes spectacularly so.

but too bad the Democratic Party ran away from ACORN as fast as they could when ACORN could have used the support.

(62,325 posts)something was wrong right from the beginning and did call the police, one of his relatives was also a police officer who he contacted. O'Keefe lied and smeared him, lied about wearing the pimp outfit too, implying that Vera was unconcerned about what they were claiming to do.
Vera lost his job, he was devastated. The media made no attempt to verify that story. But right here on DU we figured it out almost immediately, including the fact that Very had called the police.
This is a travesty, no way is that enough to compensate what was done to this really decent man.
I hope he is suing Fox also, AND Karl Rove who was on Fox slamming these workers. And he should sue the entire media who never reported on the fact that the whole thing was a scam. So people still think ACORN did something wrong, thanks to our useless, corporate owned media.
And Congress, including Democrats lied and defunded ACORN based on those lies and despite the fact that courts ruled they could not do this legally.
This whole thing was a travesty and shame on Democrats who once again 'compromised' and destroyed one of the best organizations that worked for minorities and the poor.
Our government and media really do hate the poor. This I have learned over the past ten years.
I am glad he won, but that amount of money is an insult, and for the scam he conducted which destroyed so many lives, that weasel, criminal, moron O'Keefe should be in jail. But instead he is protected. Something is really rotten in this country.

(50,566 posts)I would have sued him for everything he had: the contents of his bank account, the possessions in his apartment, even the underwear he had on. Hand him a pair of cheap sneakers and a tyvek bunny suit to put on when he turned over the clothes he was wearing. Okay, so it's probably less than $10k worth of stuff...but it would send a message: fuck with us and we will leave you in a barrel.
