I'm involved and we have big hopes and real plans, with Democratic Party support, to bring Texas into play. Wish us luck, it's a lot of work but Texas Democrats are used to working hard. We're aiming for purple and then BLUE. It makes me dizzy just to type that.
What?
That's the vision of Battleground Texas, a new group of former Obama campaign aides seeking to turn the Lone Star State into a political battleground, where Democrats go head to head with the dominant Republicans and are at least competitive.
And "when the time is right, we'll have a competitive statewide" election, said Jeremy Bird, former National Field Director with Obama's campaign and a senior adviser to the Battleground Texas project.
Some Texas democrats are more than optimistic it could happen soon. Tanene Allison, communications director for the Texas Democratic Party, says their operation shares Battleground Texas' goals and thinks "absolutely in 2016 we'll be considered a battleground" where Texas is a state that candidates must visit on the road to the White House.
But is it all talk? After all, Texas hasn't gone for a Democrat on the presidential ballot since 1976, when Jimmy Carter narrowly won the state over Gerald Ford.
Bird says his group will inject some blue energy in the state, applying the techniques his candidate used to win two presidential elections, including sweeping the states political analysts agreed were electoral battlegrounds.
"This program will make Texas a battleground state by treating it as one," he said on a Tuesday conference call with reporters, mentioning plans for voter registration and digital efforts aimed at expanding the base of Democratic voters in Texas. "Grassroots voices are already changing this country on a scale that was unheard of in this country a few years ago."

Did you get to catch us covered on the Colbert Report tonight? It was great!
Here's a tweet about it.
@BGTX: @ColbertReport : "Can this @jeremybird enact his sinister plan to win this election through his sinister plan of getting people voting?"
Catch a rerun or it on the web if you missed it. It's worth seeing. Oh, and poor Perry is already leaking grey matter he can't spare over the movement!

(437 posts)I caught the part about the unregistered Hispanics which caught my attention. I will look at it in its entirety. I noticed Perry's comment about UT going maroon before ever goes blue. Has no clue UT is blue. He's the one that went moron from maroon LOL

When I die, I may not go to heaven
Cause heaven might not let this cowboy in,
If they don't, then let me go to Texas,
Cause Texas is as close as I've been.

I signed up. We need to get more Hispanics registered.
The turn out rate in the RGV was poor. Very sad.

The plan is to get our voters registered, get them to the polls and get them voting. We have enough population with Democratic tendencies to do this, we just needed to be organized. Now we're being led by some of the best in the nation!

Obama - 43.68%, McCain - 55.45%

2012:
Obama - 41.38%, Romney - 57.17
15.86 point differential
The problem is the GOP does not do nearly as bad with Latinos in states like Texas or Florida that they do in other states like Nevada or Colorado. The Latino population is a bit complex. They don't vote as a solid bloc and they vote differently depending on geographic location.
Yes, you got to start somewhere. But understand this would be a very long-term project that may not pan out at all. Understand that there are cultural differences here. Texas is big on their death penalty. They are big on guns. They like to think they don't even need the federal government (Lone Star State?). They still allow spanking of kids in schools. They are big on oil. A progressive Democrat going into that state in 2016 and winning? Im sorry, I just dont see it.

(28,158 posts)We're going to get people registered, get them to the polls and get them to vote. This isn't the old Texas Democratic Party. We're organizing under some of the best in the country.
Watch and see what we do down here. You're going to be amazed.

(260 posts)We need the type of Democrat that can win over huge blocks of Hispanics and African American while getting a sizable chunk of crossover votes from conservative whites.
The answer is DLC Democrats. No wonder Hillary is doing so well in the polls there.
