Has DU ever had a major outage, like FR has now?

1. not in the 10 years I have been around

the only problem I recall that was a real pain in the arse was a DNS issue a few years back... took a while to resolve that but a lot of that was DNS propagation that was the issue.

6. dependent on who your ISP was

access was problematic for i would say at least 24 hours. some people were able to access very soon after the problem... it took me about a day to get back to access.

15. Took me a week

but DU itself wasn't down. I just used a proxy server to read it until my ISP caught up.

2. No. There's a yahoo group called the DU Panic room

for such times, and I've only received a few emails from it over 6 years.

5. Slow Down...Yes...

Many of us "oldtimers" can remember election nights and other heavy news events where the poor little DU hamsters just couldn't keep up, but the site would soldier on. We see remnants of it when certain features are shut down...

On election or debate nights....certain features were turned off but that was the extent of the outage.

Probably because of the whole "we're trying to Frankenstein a SCSI backup server" which, aside from being a load of gibberish, begs the questions, "With all that money, where are the backups? And why not just buy a new server?"

Backups and restores are probably primitive. What are the chances they have actually tested they restore plan to see if it works? I'd bet not at all.

13. I believe the entire backup plan consisted of "cross fingers and pray."

If they did anything as rudimentary as copying the basic, critical files I'd be amazed.

It was a DNS problem that the admins didn't directly control. Other than that, not for more than a few hours in my memory.
