(Reuters) - President Barack Obama pressed Congress on Monday to at least hold a vote on banning assault weapons, the most contentious part of his plan to curb gun violence in the United States.
Obama's comments suggested a realization in the White House that it will be difficult to get such a ban passed by lawmakers, despite consistent public support for the measure.
Opposition is high in Congress, including among some Democrats, and by calling simply for a vote, Obama seemed to acknowledge that even getting that far - let alone having an assault weapons ban approved - would be a struggle.
"We should restore the ban on military style assault weapons and a 10-round limit for magazines. And that deserves a vote in Congress, because weapons of war have no place on our streets," Obama said as uniformed law enforcement officers stood behind him at the Minneapolis Police Department's Special Operation Center.

(11,464 posts)and President Obama knows that having his health care plan puts us that much closer to a single pay system (though those without foresight don't see it of course)
and not getting an assault weapons ban approved, will indeed put the NRA and the gun culture one day closer to being extinct.
Because smart people know banning just assault weapons doesn't cut the jist of the problem out and mass killings will occur with loopholes anyhow
So either way, President Obama ropes the dopes again
and it will take the voting booth to vote out every single NRA backed candidate.

(31,706 posts)No way will any gun control see the light of the day in the rushpublican House. They'd rather spend hours on end voting to limit a woman's right to choose and repealing Obamacare. There's a bunch of Democratic Senators who fear the millions the NRA will put into campaigns in 2014...especially in purple and red states. Until gun control groups can match the money and votes the cowards will run from anything involving gun control. Damn I wish I were wrong...

(30,058 posts)We need a ban on weapons of war, too much gun violence in the USA, too many innocent American citizens are being attacked. If we went to war after the Twin Towers was attacked then we have another internal war going on. Guns is the weapon of choice much too often. It is time Congress stood tall and brave. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!
