Singer Ray Collins, one of Frank Zappa‘s original Mothers of Invention, passed away on December 24, after being in a medically induced coma for several days.

Ray was the lead vocalist on the Mothers’ early albums, including Freak Out!, Absolutely Free and Cruising with Ruben & the Jets. He contributed to other Zappa projects through the mid-1970s.

Ray Collins was 76 years old.

(Lieutenant Tragg of Perry Mason fame)

That's a shame. The Mothers were quite a group -- really defied labels.

I saw the original Mothers live a few times circa '66-'67. They were very loud & totally amazing. Tripped my brains out listening to 'Freak Out', when acid was still legal.

RIP Ray!

Sorry that Zappa fellow commandeered your Soul Giants into the original Mothers of Invention.

All Rays vocals on reuben and the Jets are especially noteworthy.

Frank, Jimmy Carl, Jim Motorhead and now Ray. Go out and see the Grandmothers and Project Object and even Zappa Plays Zappa while these people are still around. Hell, I got to meet Bunk Gardner and Don Preston recently. It's a lot of fun for a longtime Zappa fan to finally meet people I been staring at on record albums for forty years.

...and the chances are good, that the vegetable will respond to you.

This is a song about vegetables, they keep ya regular They're real good for you.

Standing there shiny and proud by your side
Holding your hand while the neighbors decide
Why is a vegetable something to hide?
