The culture has been dumbed down by this Ayn Randian idiocy where everything is valued based on its profit potential. That's why they're coming for the schools, the prisons, the military. There's an ideological denial of any value that doesn't translate into corporate profits.

It's a question of what we're actually trying to achieve as a society. The potential for a few to accumulate ludicrous wealth, or a sustainable, improving civilization?
