A week after a gunman armed with an assault rifle murdered 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, and ever so shortly after the bells there tolled for the dead, LaPierre lashed out at everyone and everything but the weapons that were used to kill. Still worse, in his arrogance and in his sense that terrible forces are out to get him, LaPierre was callous to the raw agony of the families of the slain. The hell with them he made clear that he will fight to maintain the easy availability of assault weaponry of the kind that killed their kids.

(1,922 posts)It was for one of those deals where they hand you a list of things to do/get and the first one to fill the list wins. Some kind of contest for the guy's Union and the winner gets a week's pay.
We were in NYC for Prairie Home Companion.

(1,922 posts)Every December, GF's NY client has an annual conference and dinner. We trek out (we live in Wine Country, CA) to NYC and hang out in Manhattan for a couple of weeks. We always catch PHC at Old Town Hall.
We then return to the Bay Area and catch the show a few weeks later at The Great American Music Hall in the city. Due to scheduling conflicts, that, unfortunately, is not going to happen for us in January. However we have tickets to Pat Donohue's gig at Eric Schoenberg's guitar shop on Jan5. Eric has the coolest small guitar shop on the planet.

It's great to listen to players like Jorma, Kottke, Geoff Muldaur, etc., in a room with twenty other folks. When the tuning and timing is perfect and all of those fine guitars on the wall start to hum harmonically, is a guitar player's dream.

(56,828 posts)the NY Daily News is more moderate Republican. Unless they've changed, they're certainly not liberal.

(8,048 posts)(and I won't say how long ago that was) and living in New York, the Daily News was considered far right conservative. The NY Times was left of center, Newsweek (from the 'burbs) was "progressive." The Post was a gossip rag, "Aliens have landed" mindless crap.
I guess things have changed, as far as the Daily News is concerned.
Wow. Just wow.

(12,471 posts)I know that things have changed a bit, but living here about 80 miles from NYC, I get to see these papers, albeit much less frequently than I did when I lived there (shortly after the Brooklyn Eagle went under), and I would expect this sort of statement to come from the Village Voice. Well it might have come from the NY Times too.
Sometimes I just can't tell where the NY Daily News can come out for an issue any more, but that's just me.

(13,877 posts)TSA was created out of an equal and justifiable outrage, as were a host of laws and societal horror/upheaval we had never experienced. Difference was, it was "them", not "us".
And there is a lot of money in the gun industry and 80,000,000 owners (?) and a massive "support system". They pay the tab.
Treat guns like we treated gold in the 30s. Life has changed. Our society has changed. Here are the new rules.
If you're legally registered, fine, yet it will include heavy taxation and periodic re-registration with fees. Whether we like it or not, we can not "un gun" 300 million of them and most are law-abiding citizens who believe the Constitution protects their rights to have a gun. But it in no way spells out what will be required to get, keep or sell that gun.
The Constitution didn't provide for car ownership or rights to own a car or the price of a car or even how many one can own, but we figured it out.
