Among all the sinister mass shootings- this has to be among the most senseless attacks on innocence .. I have had bouts of crying every single day .. I am petrified to contemplate, even for a second, what the parents are going through .. I immediately block all such thought whenever it takes shape in my mind...
But I swear .. I have never been more determined to make a difference.. I know the intensity of my feelings will not last. But I hope we ( anti gun-violence crowd) can use this moment to develop a clear goal and an action plan forward.
How committed do you think you will be to this cause 3 months from now when all the shock and sensationalism has worn off this story ( what a sick word !! - story is supposed to be a good thing)

I think I will march on regardless - even if I am on the only voice and I look like a fool - because I know this is the ONLY right thing to do.

I think I will be actively engaged- but only if I see that things are shaping up differently.

I am cynical. After all the noise dies down - we will see re-emergence of old patterns. So why bother?

(3,891 posts)I doubt I'll change. They are too dangerous to allow into civilized society, we must change. Think of the tens of thousands we could save by getting rid of the damned things.

(4,426 posts)I am tired of the "won't give an inch" types who think their "2A rights" are more valuable than our childrens' rights to go about their daily lives in relative safety.
They can recognize the problem or not. They can be part of the problem solving or not. But the problem must be solved.

What I would really like is for President Obama to lead that movement - and give voice to our common feelings .. I don't want him playing a facilitator on this one .. He needs to take charge on this

(1,426 posts)but by not doing our moral duty - we are voting for status quo.
So I am committing to the following ( none of which I have done before)
1) attend at least one rally. If I can't find one - I will hold a ' honk if you support' event - just by myself if needed.
2) Badger my congressman - by actually going to the office. Fuck phone calls.
3) Donate my time/money to an anti-gun organization.

(24,342 posts)crazy gun culture crap on a strong liberal site like this I feel we have no chance enacting the reforms we need.
The gun nuts here make Democrats look bad.

(13,081 posts)I've inherited a small arsenal over the years (father, grandfather, other grandfather, wife's first husband in her divorce).
On Christmas morning I am going to destroy the Glock and the S&W. Sledge hammer and blow torch. Three more handguns are extremely rare and quite valuable; I could get a pretty good tax deduction for donating them to a museum, which is a win-win for me.
Not sure what I'll do with the hunting rifles and shotguns. I'm thinking they'd be fun to smash, too.
No more violence. I must be the change I wish to see in the world. I am committed.

(1,426 posts)Change is hard. Especially if it involves you.

(13,081 posts)I've never purchased a single firearm. They were literally all inherited. I just kept them out of sentimentality, or because they were valuable.

(21,977 posts)I'm guessing that the answer to both is NO. You're not the problem.
But if you want to destroy them, they're your property. But don't imagine you're making a big difference in the world.
