Teachers at Sandy Point demonstrated their selfless dedication to their student putting the safety of their students above all. Nationwide teachers demonstrate this each day in classrooms mainly by accepting low pay and long hours and often times class project cost coming from their own pocketbook.
Isn't it about time we put teachers pay on the table, isn't it time we put education funding on the table and a push for the same quality world class education as other county s kids.
Our education is drastically underfunded while we still pay 2 billion a week in the war of terror that isnt anymore and we give oil company's subsidies.
Teachers prove themselves heros daily... lets recognize them for that.

(2,091 posts)I taught school in Northeastern CT for 32 years. The teachers in CT towns closer to NYC make considerably more money than teachers in the small NE towns where I taught. In fact, my friends who taught and retired in Michigan also earned more. Teachers in CT are not able to pay into SS and cannot receive SS. My husband was in private industry for 25 years before going into education. Even though he paid more than 40 quarters into SS, he had to take a 60% reduction in his SS because he retired from the State of CT. One cannot make a blanket statement CT teachers are the highest paid in the country. The most I ever earned in CT was $50,000 (I retired 3 years ago) and that was my 32nd year and with a Master's (required in CT.)
It's time teachers are paid their worth.

(22,336 posts)I don't know about here, but on Facebook the same people suggesting teachers can handle the responsibility of also being armed security guards are also the ones suggesting teachers don't do anything that extraordinary or work that hard so they don't deserve more than about $25k a year anyway. (I live in Michigan and union busting is in the news.)

(579 posts)When I decided to become a teacher I knew the economic consequences. The error many education reformers (Gates, Walton, DeVoss) make is in thinking everyone is motivated by money. I wanted to do good work. My pay was lower middle class at best. It was enough. We had to work pretty hard to keep our wages at that minimally respectable level. No teacher would turn down a raise. What they (we) would want is respect for the important work we do, appreciation for the value we bring to a community, and a WILL TO MAkE SCHOOLS SAFE. Do it for the kids. Teachers do.

(595 posts)I get so sick of the merit pay scam. These people really believe teachers are sitting around, not working to their potential, because they aren't getting bonuses. It's ridiculous.

(45,851 posts)Since teachers are so selfless and dedicated they won't mind at all taking a pay cut.
Guaranteed someone on the right will say this before long.

(812 posts)especially when we refuse to tax windfall profits on oil which is the joint property of everyone on the planet and then subsidize the petroleum companies to the tune of Six billion dollars every year.
Teachers are the real job creators, not some poltroon pulling down multi-million dollar a year bonuses by raising profits from outsourcing and layoffs, this is not job creation, this is the destruction of America as we know it.
Professional Educators need their own lobby to counter the deleterious effects of the for-profits like Education Inc. and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Phoenix Universities.
Education is the vocation of a true democracy,of,by and for the people!
