(36,437 posts)People are sick of the gun fanaticism that defines his identity, and he doesn't know how to cope. He used to just rattle off cliched statistics and people would be so bored of his bullshit that they'd disengage. He always misread this as "victory," and it probably was to some extent, since the strategy was always to instill indifference in the issue in others. But now people are engaging, and he doesn't know what to do, and people won't stop saying that his whole identity and culture is fucking sick in its root. So he posts this utterly pathetic OP in his panic. Chest puffing clownery at its finest.

(30,252 posts)...and while people like me have been working our butts off to get Democrats elected to public office (yes, that includes Obama), such work has also included blunting the efforts of gun-control activists whose efforts badly hurt the party in 1994 and resulted in long-term woe for our nation. Sorry, but I was around to see the ban get passed in 1994, and I saw quite clearly what happened to Democrats as a result - and I don't want to see that happen again.
You think you're going to get a better deal from the Republicans on Medicare, Social Security, education, environmental issues, and even (yes, I dare to go there) the welfare of America's children? Sorry, not gonna happen.
Sooner or later you're going to learn that if you want a conversation on gun laws in America, it's going to have to be an actual conversation, not the hysterics I've been witness to all weekend long. I've already had an online slapfight with a Brady Campaign luminary; I'd just as soon not have it with my fellow DUers.

(363 posts)Lets say pro control gets what (in todays environment) some very reasonable and easy to agree upon concessions. Magazine limits, all private sales open and required to NCIS checks. The "assault" par is debatable - in essence the control side to have any effect would need to be a ban on semi automatic long guns. Even though handguns are the real problem.
And Feinstein KNOWS there is no way to go after guns in existence - thats why her current proposal is grandfathered.
So after all this we have no more new semi auto long guns sold. No more new magazines larger than 5 rounds.
What happens after the next incident like this? More rules?
Because here is the reality - and the ammo for the pro side. Laughner, Holmes, and Lanza, for all practical purposes - were low hanging fruit for identifying potential killers. Most everyone around them, and we are talking in a professional setting - academic, counselors, police at times - were POWERLESS to do anything about it - even though they were right there, on a silver platter, to intervene.
Which do you think makes more sense. Spending BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars to go after all the guns and ammo in peoples closets (who are doing nothing wrong), or spend the money to help people who scream (figuratively) I need Help? And if you think we can do both you haven't been following what's going on in Washington
muriel_volestrangler
(101,442 posts)It's a term in common usage, with an understood meaning. "Assault rifle" is not some ur-phrase, existing in the primordial swamps waiting for humans to discover it. A person put those 2 words together, just like another put "assault weapon" together.
Rifles are a type of weapon. However, it would not have been good law to ban just assault 'rifles', because pedantic gun manufacturers would have produced smooth bore models.

Forgive me, the function of these weapons is assault when used is suppressive fire mode (which your civilian version does not do, only difference) and more accurate semi auto fire. Yes the military version also fires burst. The rate of fire possible out of the civilian versions make them pretty Damn capable INFANTRY riffles.
The muzzle velocity, or size of round does not magically change. The AR 15 and the Bushmaster use NATO 5.56.

Gun control hasn't won a battle for years...maybe a decade..All the wailing that has been done over "the gun show loophole" and guess what? Nothing has been done about it because nothing can be done about it without a constitutional amendment repealing the "commerce clause"...just like most of the nonsense being suggested over the past few days..constitutional impossibilities
Chorophyll
(5,179 posts)In 2012, people are being sprayed with projectiles from weapons that the Founders could not have imagined.
The 2nd Amendment to which you cling so desperately was written during a time when the English were still our enemy, when we had yet to decimate the Native Americans, and when we did not yet have a cohesive military or municipal police forces. So that would be why they put in that "well-regulated militia" part which you gun "enthusiasts" never seem to mention.
That's all I need to know, and it's all I need to tell you. My kid has to go to school in about six hours, and I shouldn't have to be worried about what I'm worried about right now.
Gun control has been enacted in every other developed nation on this planet, and it's coming here too. You can keep a big stick next to your bed from now on, okay?

(16,038 posts)understood the history of civilization, of government, of power. There are papers written by the founders which prove your claims incorrect. If I get around to it I may post some tomorrow. Precedent has been set by SCOTUS, this is no small hurtle, stating that there is an individual right.
Are you also worried about your child being in an auto accident? Or drowning while swimming? Or being hit by a vehicle? Of coarse...we all are...children cause worry, all of those things mentioned are far more likely to threaten your child than being shot. Doesn't mean it can't happen, just that the worry should be tempered by reality.
You've got a lot of constitutional work to do and any guns I may own aren't going anywhere.

The truth is you've been winning all along. You have not been ignored; you run the show. You have not been laughed at; you are now being questioned and yes, demonized, because the result of your insistence of your rights has been the death of 20 children and 6 adults in an elementary school.
DU, over the past few days, has indeed been completely over the top on the subjects of gun rights and gun control. Totally true. That's because we're outraged and desperate. As a person who is not a gun person, my perception is that the NRA and gun-rights advocates are and have been utterly unwilling to accept any compromise. That's where this is coming from. Americans are massacred routinely with guns, and we're sick of being told that there's nothing we, as a country, can do about it. It's in the Constitution, after all, convoluted grammar and all.
It's time for gun-rights advocates to come to the table with more than the cold, dead hands cliche. Will you win again? Yes, you will. But if there is an ounce of decency in the gun-rights advocacy behemoth (and honestly, I'm not sure there is), SOME kind of attempts at compromise must be proposed.
Otherwise, we, the non-gun-toting populace, are going to see you (yes, you) as the reason a 7-year-old got shot six times. In a SECOND.
How could we not be outraged and horrified? Moreover, how could gun-rights advocates not be outraged and horrified? Where are those voices?

(30,252 posts)In fact, if yewberry doesn't want to make this an OP, I'd be more than happy to do it. This is the kind of dialogue that reaches me - and it has, quite honestly, made me take a good look at where I stand and where I go from here.
I've always insisted that I'm not the monster some of these folks make me out to be. Maybe a little like Shrek, sometimes, but that's it.
I may never know what it's like to be a parent, but I too know what it's like to hold a little child and see her smiling face.

(594 posts)One cannot reason with gun advocates. But Krugman is right...we have far more votes than they. Take it to the ballot box. They will lose.

(28,297 posts)I've been reading your attention-hungry posts about guns for years, and it's pretty obvious that DU is no longer a suitable place for you. I didn't like your comments about Molly Ivins, I didn't like your comments about Gabby Giffords, and I damn sure don't like your tone-deaf comments following the slaughter of twenty school kids in Connecticut. Just leave. Please.

(28,270 posts)Speaking as a gun owning democrat...you seem threatened and scared. Why?
I fully back a military assault weapon ban/buy back program. It worked great in Australia apparently. It could work here too.
It was the height of insanity that these military weapons of mass destruction were ever offered to the public in the first place.
They also need to ban high capacity ammo clips. The life of one child is way more important than any and every damn gun ever made, IMHO.

(30,252 posts)All of this back-and-forth has become counterproductive.
If we're ever going to reach consensus, I have to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.
I have a temper just like everyone else, but I also know that everyone's emotions are running high lately.
I don't want to fan the flames. Please lock this thread, shut it down, and let cooler heads and hearts prevail.
Thank you.

(2,161 posts)Your whining thread didn't get you the hand-holding and sympathy you expected, so rather than address the RAGE directed at you and your gun-nuttery, you want to close the thread
Thousands of deaths aren't enough 'winning' for you, you need to have your hand held....
COWARD!!

(43,235 posts)You come on with some vague statement about how you feel victimized but how you will "win", all after a horrific tragedy.
You made your bed. Now lie in it.

(30,252 posts)Believe me, I'm used to it. But something has to be done to stop all the hate on DU, and if I have to make the first move, so be it.

(62,444 posts)You can lock the thread yourself by deleting your OP, but you'd rather whine for someone else to do it?
Now I've seen everything.
But, no, if you self-delete and lock the thread, then your OP no longer stands. So, instead, you want to keep your OP up, but not take any flack.
Typical coward.

(5 posts)Are democrats not allowed to own guns? That's the feeling I'm getting from reading these posts. Of course, this is post tragedy, so deep irrational fear and paranoia is to be expected, similar to 9/11.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
