I know that's a dream.
But it would be nice if someone on the right, a senator, speaker of the house, the NRA, you know ANYONE on the right had the fucking guts to step up to microphone and say we are also tired of this bullshit and we are going to lead the way to restrict these weapons of mass destruction.
But no. Not one of them have the strength, do they?
What a bunch of sad, pathetic, weak assed 'leaders' they are.
If they fight or resist this coming tide of change, then it is incumbent upon us, WE THE PEOPLE, to beat them into the shadows forever more.
NO MORE MASS CARNAGE.
NEVER AGAIN.

(15,627 posts)if the NRA ever wanted to salvage some credibility they should take the lead on figuring out how to let people who like guns have them but make it harder to obtain and use in the fashion we've just witnessed.
Also they should donate money to mental health research, push the government to restore the funding that existed when Reagan was president and use their financial resources to help the families affected recover.

(12,286 posts)Why is it so hard for them to step up and say 'we are for resposible gun ownership' and never want this tragedy to happen again?
I just don't understand why they are so weak.

(3,547 posts)it also has the "cards" stacked agasint it. The problem being in today's sound bite media the NRA's arguements cannot be made effectively and forces them to use stupid talking points. But then again you assume that they have a credibility problem- the american public in general holds a somewhat positive view of them
But that being said- they are right IMO in opposing an AWB. It will do nothing to prevent these tragedies- not to even limit the carnage. The thing is it "feels good" to pass something like that. If you truly want to try prevent these events there are a few things you can do- create a system where mental health professionals can report people they feel shouldnt have weapons to NICS (the gun check system) and a national safe storage law (carefully tailored to still allow someone to keep a loaded gun in their nightstand).

(10,019 posts)There is no functional difference between a high-standard hunting rifle and a semi-automatic qualifying for the AWB. I would agree that 30 - shot clips have no sporting purpose, but trying to regulate their manufacture or posession is a sketchy proposition at best.
Full-auto stuff is way too easy for a crafty nut to get their hands on just now - and there is a whole universe of stuff I think of as fetish weapons that are pretty hard to differentiate from things with a legitimate use. Is there anyone from the gun worlk that could come up with a plan to keep most of this stuff locked up, under responsible control?
And how about some tracking and storage standards on ammo? How many THOUSAND rounds is safe to keep around before you gotta tell the fire department or somebody? How big an ammo factory can you run in a gararge (reloading) before the neighbors should be nervous?

(59,613 posts)But it's never, ever going to happen.
The Big, Bad NRA doesn't even have the balls to COMMENT on this flat-out massacre of SCHOOL CHILDREN.
Not a web post, not a press release, not so much as a tweet or a Facebook post or a "like". Nothing.
They don't even have the decency to extend a formulaic, rubber-chicken word of sympathy to a town that just got shredded by high-capacity clips and members of the well-regulated militia and all that.

(32,620 posts)They will do the reverse to raise more money. If they did come out for an assault weapons ban a lot of DUers would be very upset.
