(490 posts)ii) He faced a stiff, wooden Gore and a stiff, wooden Kerry. He lost to Gore the popular vote to Gore in spite of a hyper-energised base.
iii) He had the 'war on terror' in 2004.
iv) He was perceived by a lot of people as being more personable than both of his opponents.
I wouldn't have thought it possible, but whether it is Romney or Gingrich, the GOP have outdone not only themselves this year, but they have selected a candidate without any of the redeeming qualities of the 1980s failed Democratic candidates, who were both...stiff and wooden. They have successfully managed to out-Dole Bob Dole, out-Goldwater Barry Goldwater, out-Mondale Walter Mondale and out-Dukakis Michael Dukakis. There is literally nothing positive to say about their prospective nominee. Nothing. None of the above, weak candidates though they were, had nothing on these characters. They were all monumentally impressive, untarnished candidates in comparison, and they would all most likely defeat Gingrich or Romney by way of crushing landslide.
There is no room for complacency, and I trust that the Obama campaign will not fall into that trap, but for goodness' sake...I may not be American, but as a deep admirer of your country's finer qualities (I caught the bug at about four years old and it has been with me ever since), as an avid follower of your political scene, I wouldn't have thought it possible that such a risible, failed, unlikeable by every metric bar the GOP's default 35% candidate could get the nod in this day and age.
Whoever they select from hereon, they have indeed managed to pull that off. I'm astonished.

(490 posts)However, Bush had his war on terror crap to cushion the fall, and Kerry - I think wrongly, I think he's a likeable man (but I'm not a far-right nutter) - was seen as super-stiff and unable to connect with people.
Imagine how much LESS likeable Gingrich and, to a lesser but very real extent, Romney are. Imagine how that works out, even if 'masterdebater' Newt scores a few blows on Obama with his blatant falsehoods. Obama would have to truly tank or send a lookalike in his place for debates against Gingrich to really cause enough damage.

(8,021 posts)Newt will continue hammering Mitt from the right, which will force Romney to also move to the right. They'll both bash each other, pander to their extremist base, saying all kinds of ridiculous shit that will hurt them with independents in the general.
