"Every civilization carries the seeds of its own destruction, and the same cycle shows in them all. The Republic is born, flourishes, decays into plutocracy, and is captured by the shoemaker whom the mercenaries and millionaires make into a king. The people invent their oppressors, and the oppressors serve the function for which they are invented. "
-- Mark Twain; The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today.
As the 2024 presidential election draws nearer, I would like to focus on one of the most important reasons that it is essential that we win. It has to do with the Department of Justice, and specifically the FBI. In an effort to keep this essay as short as possible, I will say the need is highlighted by the release of author Joe Moore's book, "White Robes and Broken Badges."
Moore is a former Army sniper who infiltrated the KKK for ther FBI. The election of Barak Obama to the presidency had brought racism out from under a rock, and groups like the KKK and other closely related spin-off organizations posed the threat of violence. Indeed, Moore's work helped the FBI foil a plot to assassinate Obama.
The book's foreword is by Rep. Jamie Raskin, which alone is a very good recommendation. The book details how the racist hate groups have infiltrated local, county, and state police forces, as well as public offices. These scum are, of course, hoping that the felon will be elected or able to steal this year's election, so that he can appoint like-minded scum to lead the DoJ and FBI.
Recently on this forum, I had a debate with a visitor who attacked the presidents from the Democratic Party for their appointments of FBI directors. I have trusted those presidents to make the correct choices for this important office. That does not translate to my being pleased with every action or inaction the DoJ and FBI opt to take, or the speed of actions. But I do appreciate the size of the task they face.
There are, of course, other cases involving the legal system that need to be addressed that do not involve racism. Although the full extent of the FBI investigation that touches on the Karen Read case in MA remains unknown. However, the two experts the FBI hired to investigate the claim that Read killed her boyfriend testified in her recent trial that did not happen. The case has exposed significant police corruption.
The "Young Thug" (YSL) RICO trial in Georgia has documented wrong-doing by prosecutors and the first judge hearing the case. Despite that judge's best efforts to deny improper actions, he was removed. The new judge appears to be the type of person who we want in such a position.
The legal system is a foundation stone of democracy. It should not be political. That is something that every American should recognize. It has faced constant threats going back to Day One, and there are eras where those threats increase to high levels. We are in one of those today. The felon seeks to plant those seeds of destruction if he wins. To quote a Bob Marley lyric, by voting we can "kill them before they grow."

(74,794 posts)was to encourage people to get bust doing actual work to support the Harris-Walz campaign. I enjoy laughing at the stupid things that the felon says, and making rude jokes about his VP pick as much as anyone herre. In fact, I truly appreciate sick humor when it comes to them. These are good things.
I less interersted in what Katy Tur said today, since I know that just as my dog barks, the cat meows, and my hen clucks, Katy will say something stupid every single dsay she opens her mouth. I dpn't have one second -- much less a minute -- to listen to her. I would much rather invest time in reaching voters (and potential voters) about the absolute need to vote for Harris/ Walz this November. This OP was from a conversation I had this morning with a couple people who were uncertain if they would vote this year.
I am looking forward to working on the Harris / Walz campaign in October, but can't do anything before then. Meanwhile I am donating.
I recognize the threat 45 poses to justice in this country. But we can't overlook the damage he's already done. There are loads of deplorables he hired into FBI and even secret service.
I like Merrick Garland. I believe he's reflected Biden's wish to be neutral. But I hope Kamala totally cleans house and heads roll, including Garland and Christopher Wray. I think Garland has been too soft on the deplorables and too hard on Hunter Biden. Christopher Wray is far from neutral.
I appreciate Kamala's "no more Mr. Nice Guy" attitude and can't wait for her picks for the top justice positions.
That's all I have to say about that.
I think that all of the Democrats on this forum recognize the threat to democracy that the felon poses. Because he is that much of a threat, we should all be doing as much as we can between now and November. That will, of course, be an individual thing, and different for each one of us.
There are various talking points that we can and should use, depending upon the audience we seek to communicate with. An obvious example is Roe, and the diseased republican attempt to instill their religious beliefs as the law of the land. Combatting this has wide appeal. And the connection to the legal system is clear.
I will have 100% confident in President Harris's judgement on who should head the DoJ and FBI.

(2,957 posts)I think your sowing your words here, where the conditions are prime for growth, makes good sense. Although I agree they should be broadcast, in the farming sense, as well.
You are an amazing human.

(74,794 posts)Long ago, when there were several newspapers in my area, I wrote op-eds for virtually every one of them. And in the context of Native American - environmental issues, I've been in every newspaper in NYS. But these days there are fewer papers, covering a lot less territory. Knowing that letters-to-the-editor become the most read section of a paper as elections draw neart is important. More, the population reading them at that time period is those over 50 years of age. Because I know I can only get one LTTE in this fall, I will wait until after the convention, probably late September or early October, before submitting mine. I'll select a different issue to focus on in each.
You are very kind. But I am just an average person, at very best. Just a woodchuck that has always been interested in and active in politics. And I'm too old to box! So I focus on politics these days.

I am fully convinced that DUers have the ability to be part of a huge victory in November. And, in the 20+ years I've been here, it is clear that this place is a heck of a lot more fun when we win, than when we lose. I would like a massive supply of laughter and merriment this year when the results come in.
