John Adams named his son, John Quincy, to what is now an Ambassador (then a minister resident) to Prussia in 1797.

William Gibbs McAdoo served as secretary of the treasury and chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. When he married Woodrow Wilson's daughter later, not a peep about having him step down.

FDR's son, James, served as dad's administrative assistant starting in 1937, and 6 months later became secretary to the President.

Eisenhower appointed his son WH as staff secretary.
