(16,942 posts)A two major war preparedness plan. We have planned, and prepared for, a situation where we fight two near peer adversaries at the same time.
Do we want to do that? He'll no, but it's what we have prepared for.
It's what our force structure is built for.
China is facing a severe economic crisis at home. This may be real, or it may be a distraction.
I don't think they want a war with us, which is where this will go.

(2,085 posts)Obama Era defense posture reviews started downgrading the 2 major war posture to defeating 1 enemy while having the ability to inflict unacceptable losses to another. Trump era language further downgraded it to defeating 1 enemy while deterring another. Then Bidens reviews have largely kept the trump era language. The US military has been shrinking for years now, with most branches repeatedly missing their enlistment goals year over year.

(16,942 posts)Between national guard and reserves, we can still field a sizeable forcee. And if needed, a rapid draft would swell ranks substantially.
Not an issue.
Equipment reserves also not an.issue.
Don't underestimate the pain we can create if we need to.

Attacking Taiwan would be a different.line. it would directly draw us into war. No ifs, ands, or buts.
Taiwan is a full ally and has never criticized us. Neither has ukrsine, except to complain it isn't getting aid fast enough, which it wasnt.

(2,613 posts)'Kills tens of millions: Taiwans chilling message for China
Beijing has claimed Taiwan is dreaming if it thinks it can defend itself, but the island of 23 million may not be as helpless as they think.

(743 posts)Def can defend themselves, but they are going to be greatly outnumbered in man power, weapons, and technology.. This sadly isn't going to be like Ukraine. China has the capabilities to take Taiwan back pretty fast.
I am not sure what the US, or anyone will do, if anything. US I am sure will support Taiwan with hardware, but this might be one they chose to use more diplomatic then anything.
MutantAndProud
(855 posts)Russia and China will both be emboldened to move forward into new regions repeatedly.
I wonder if providing Taiwan with preemptive strike capability (if they dont possess it already) to deploy upon confirmation of incoming attacks would blunt any attempted invasion and make it hurt sufficiently to stop them. China has internal maintenance requirements that can only extend to so many fronts. US military intelligence will likely be relied on for more accurate assessments and strategizing, assuming they havent already set something in motion. Luckily they have a terrain advantage, just not numbers.
revmclaren
(2,613 posts)especially if Guam and other bases are threatened.
Biden has already stated that the U.S. will come to Taiwans defense and because of this, China may strike our bases first.
And if North Korea enters the frey...all bets are off.

(955 posts)About stuff made in japan especially their cars in the 70's. China has a huge manufacturing base and can make high quality. Where do you think most American branded tools come from?
And look around your house I bet over 80 percent of appliances especially electronics are made in China.
pwb
(12,082 posts)They steal technology and copy it, especially military equipment. Neither China or Russia are a pimple on our ass when it comes to anything. IMO. It is sad to think Americans believe like you do.
It is sad you underestimate what China is capable of.
Our companies outsourced manufacturing to China starting in the mid 90's. If you want to bounce around and say we are the best fine.
I was in manufacturing and watched it happen.
To think the Chinese can't improve on tech or innovate is interesting do you think they are stupid?
It is not belief it is fact.
As for stealing tech where do you think we got our rocket technology? Germany after WW2.

(4,903 posts)such action is militarily feasible (I imagine the structure would be v heavily defended).
Not that I would ever want to see such an event - it would be a calamity of major proportions, akin to a large scale nuclear strike.

(855 posts)Are not the same.
They have held drills and flyovers for years and are never shy about declaring their intent. That doesnt mean they can, or can without significant consequences.
This is also why the chip fabrication plants have been announced to have technology to destroy their equipment in case capture appears imminent, and we have been moving manufacturing away as tolerable for a while.
Software support would likely be supplied by US gov if their update servers (for various electronic brands) were unable to operate.

(4,124 posts)Ferrying troops through a gauntlet of Taiwanese, US and Japanese ships, missiles, submarines, mines and drones could potnentialy be the biggesst risk he'd ever take. There was a reason Operation Sealion never happened, and it wasn't because of sea lions thinking again.
Beijings attempts to intimidate the US government into abandoning support for Taiwan have failed. Helping Taiwan to defend itself remains bipartisan US policy, even supported by Republican politicians who want to stop arming Ukraine. Despite the longstanding US policy of strategic ambiguity, President Biden has publicly stated four times that US forces would intervene in Taiwans defence.
Xi needs merely to avoid Taiwan declaring formal independence. If Taiwan did do so, Xi would probably opt for war. But even Taiwanese governments controlled by the Democratic Progressive Party, which rejects the idea of Taiwan being part of China, have shown that they will not cross this line.
Xi reached the pinnacle of the Party hierarchy through a career of careful positioning and quiet ruthlessness, not by taking grand gambles. Since then, he has shown a preference for grey-zone tactics. I see no convincing reason to expect him to rush to a military showdown over Taiwan.
