"Obviously, he's mourned the passing of his wife of 77 years, which is just an unbelievable thing," he added.
But Jason said his grandfather's spirit remain strong.
"He turned 99 last year, and he's been in this hospice situation for so long, and he's so severely limited physically that we've all been worried that he's miserable," Jason shared. "But we had this moment, he and I, last year on his 99th birthday."
"The Carter Center had done this enormous social media project where there were birthday wishes from all over the world, and I was telling him about it," Jason said. "I said, 'Papa we got all these birthday wishes,' and he said, 'From who?'"
"I said, 'Papa, from thousands and thousands and thousands of people' and 'from over 100 countries," Jason recalled. "And he, like, paused and it really hit him in Plains, Georgia, on this day, when he was 99, and he said, '100 countries.'"
"He kind of teared up," the younger Carter shared. "And it's just an incredible idea to think that somebody like that from that little place could have had the impact truly globally that he had, and I think it affected him."

Hope he survives long enough to hear the guilty verdict this week.
Fight on Jimmy the beloved.

He always said he wanted to outlive the last guinea worm. I hope he gets that news before he goes. There were 27 known cases in 2020, so we've got to be close.

Sometimes, we DO recognize them by their works. We need to show gratitude and honor them with some good works of our own, as we can. But NOBODY in decades, perhaps centuries can match Jimmy Carter.

He is a good, decent man. The world needs some Jimmy Carters right about now. Thankfully he had a smart, good woman like Rosalynn to walk beside him on his path.

(59,000 posts)... he put his hand and sweat into, all over the nation. And that in itself is a legacy very few people could ever match. Now consider: that doesn't represent a fraction of his good and selfless and largely unknown things he's done, including acts of bravery done in uniform.
There should be a place in Hell for those Reaganites who slandered and libeled him into only one term.

(32,332 posts)is that he truly was one of the very best (if not the best) person in terms of what he did outside of the presidency. I know of no other president who gave so selflessly - the work for Habitat into his golden years was just amazing and showed how very much he cared for others. This is what I will remember the most about this wonderful man.
