I was wrong to suggest that Senate Democrats should hold hearings to investigate justices Thomas and Alito, they will just ignore the subpoenas. Their billionaire owners like Harlan Crowe will just ignore the subpoenas.
I understand that Clarence/Ginni were involved in the fake elector scheme. I understand that Alito flew 2 flags at his houses that supported Trump's Stop the Steal. I understand there are 2 huge cases before the court: 1, if the Magats who attacked the Capitol really impeded Congress, and 2. If Trump has immunity to murder people. I understand that we can't force Thomas and Alito to recuse. Dick Durbin said it best, he said there is nothing we can do.
I once again apologize for being so foolish, I instead offer up my thoughts and prayers that they will recuse.

(8,111 posts)it is the Democrats' responsibility to call them out. Otherwise, it just becomes the norm. That is what has happened for the last 8 years. The media, our elected officials, and the voters have ignored the lies, name-calling, racism, and everything else as if it was just "not really serious". Now it is a daily occurrence. This is not normal or acceptable and they need to hear it 24/7. ☮
Think. Again.

(24,013 posts)I understand the predicament, however, holding televised hearings would force the MSM to cover them and shine a light on the fascist SC justices. I believe that doing nothing just emboldens them.

(24,398 posts)that bother them? Benghazi. Emails. Hunter's laptop. (I know, BESIDES wasting taxpayer $$...) They want attention on them. Let's take a page from their own playbook and make them answer shit.

(7,825 posts)See?
Took it a step further even.
Sure the SCOTUSs majority is corrupt and every GOP Congress person is doing everything they can to help what they know damn well is a criminal of the higher order guilty of multiple high crimes and misdemeanors against our beloved country.
Theyre organized, we are not. They speak with one Voice, we
not so much.
Of course Im referring to the RW GOP propaganda network organized along the lines of the famous Powell memo and not the GOP congress people, cause they are just one hot mess.
But we have to do something. The American public thinks crime is up, the stock market down and the economy is in the toilet none of which is true.
What we have more than anything is a messaging problem - a serious one and I dont think its an exaggeration to say it might just lead to the end of democracy in this country.

(24,013 posts)I also heard Schumer and Blumenthal say basically the same thing. Didn't hear Sheldon Whitehouse's opinion.
I do know that a group of House Democrats is sending a letter to Alito demanding that he recuse. That is, at least, action.
I like to debate you keyboard to keyboard, thanks for being open to me.

(17,400 posts)While hearings under current circumstances may prove futile, legislation in a second Biden administration (and the suspension of the filibuster to pass such legislation) could be very fruitful, especially if it expands and reforms the judiciary.
and thats why it may be in the countrys best interests to have someone besides Durbin heading the judiciary committee next term (last I heard, Durbin still supports both blue slips and the filibuster).
Elizabeth Warren, anyone?

(3,051 posts)My guess is getting more nominees confirmed is a high priority of Durbin and other Senate Dems. Going after Alito and Thomas is highly unlikely to lead to them appearing before the committee, and it may well piss off Senate Republicans who could make it harder to get those nominees through. While the Dems have a majority, it'd be easy enough to whip up a controversy on Fox News for example, and get their base calling and emailing.
Any controversy could be enough to cause Sinema or Manchin to balk. It's happened before.

(15,436 posts)They did not succeed in their insurrection in 2020 and their greatest fear is that 2024 they will fail again. Coups are hard to effect and even the best crafted plans. They obviously think time is on their side.and injustice will prevail. The next assault will be against Constitutional checks and balances are broken. Someday Congressional Democrats will have to admit the Constitution has been broken. How does one plan for what is coming in the face of such violation of trust.
