A video showing the capture of seven female Israeli soldiers by Hamas on 7 October has been released by the Israeli government at the request of their families.
The graphic footage shows a chaotic scene as the bloodied women are forced to line up against a wall while Hamas fighters shout orders at them.
The fighters take photographs of the women as their hands are bound. One of the fighters shouts at the captured soldiers: Our brothers died because of you.
"I have friends in Palestine," one of the Israeli conscripts, 19-year-old Naama Levy, says in English.
One of the gunmen can be heard shouting back in Arabic: "You are dogs! he says, according to Reuters.
Later they are pushed into the back of a truck while gunshots ring out around them, and presumably taken to Gaza.

I've never understood why calling someone a dog is considered an insult.
Dogs are one of the best creatures on the earth. The average dog is far superior to most humans.

Beating women and dragging them into captivity, not so much.

(5,057 posts)wanted it released is very important.
The government "must not waste even one more moment it must return to the negotiating table today," the statement said.
Its release followed a frustrating four-day postponement of a discussion of the hostages by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet, in a period where negotiations on a deal for their liberation are in a long-standing stalemate, with mounting evidence of foot-dragging on the part of the Israeli government.

say in an interview that, while he was grieving the death of his 10 year old daughter in the attack, he felt some relief that she had not been taken as a captive because of how Hamas treats women and girls.

(91,650 posts)In many parts of the world they are not pets at all, but feral creatures with filthy habits and diseases. A pack of dogs will follow a bitch in heat, and the bitch will mate with any or all of them.
Thus to call someone a dog or a bitch or a son of a bitch carries a real weight of insult. Fighting words.

(27,293 posts)It's our responsibility to take care of them.
If they aren't that's on the humans who neglect them.

(91,650 posts)In the US we are of the culture that founded the RSPCA and the ASPCA, and still there are people who love dog fighting and other cruel sports.
As a society we do aspire to better. But remnants remain in our common language
As for other countries & cultures , I find it useful to recognize how attitudes live on in behavior, not just old sayings.

(35,522 posts)Dogs.
They were called "bitches". That better?
"You're all bitches!" I can't see that flying in my high school without at least a serious reprimand. Not followed by a justification, "But they're being called loyal and affectionate."
Yeah. Right.
And that's being charitable. "Dogs" in the West may be bastards or bitches, but we love them. It's harshly frowned upon to own a dog in some ME cultures. They're unclean, dirty, and to be avoided. They live in the street and eat offal and refuse.
Coventina
(27,293 posts)Some ME cultures (as you put it)are very cruel in nature to do that to dogs.
That's on them, not the dogs.

(8,921 posts). . . the families released this video to let the world know what is really happening to the hostages.
She told me this:
One of the terrorists says something to the effect of: Don't kill them, they can have babies.
The ones who couldn't have babies, the young and the old, were raped and then murdered.

(5,057 posts)of a mistranslation of words spoken in the video which say nothing about pregnancy actually. The video itself is horrifying but pregnancy or getting pregnant is never said or even implied in the actual video that the families authorized to be shown in an attempt to shame Israeli government get Israel back to a negotiating table.
Im sure your friend who knows the family has more details than what the families put in their statement about the release. Maybe they told people about the pregnancy language and thats why people are assuming thats what is being said in the video even though its not. How heartbreaking for your friend of the family. And all the families.

(8,921 posts)And I am aware that Hamas is already pushing a narrative more to suit their goals.
As far as I know, the translation about the pregnancy is correct. I've asked for clarification on it as I do not speak Arabic. I'll post here when it I get it.
