But first and foremost their job is business, and that business is raising money.

Judas was an early, modern-day, conservative disciple.
Judas got 30 pieces of silver, but just once, for selling Christ.
Franklin Graham, Jim Bakker, Pat Robertson, and their ilk get millions of dollars repeatedly for selling Christ.
Judas was a fool for doing a one-time sale.

I mean, really, one of the first stories of the post-ascension era is when Peter confronts two people for not handing over all of their money to the cult, and we get a BS story about gawd striking them dead for it, rather than the obvious likelihood that Peter murdered them for their money. It's right there in Acts 5:1-11.
Did you see how clergy were living over the ensuing centuries? This was the home of one of their 15th century clergy:

And that's but one example of clergy living a luxurious life on their church funds.
One could list literally tens of thousands of historical examples that demonstrate how common this is. It's gone on long enough to qualify as a feature of the religion, not a bug.
