In a lengthy statement posted to Facebook, the nuns from Benedictine College publicly called out Butkers speech, which was delivered during the colleges 2024 commencement ceremony.
The sisters of Mount St. Scholastica do not believe that Harrison Butkers comments in his 2024 Benedictine College commencement address represent the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts college that our founders envisioned and in which we have been so invested. the statement read.
The nuns added that Butkers words were divisive and the assertion that women should only be homemakers is false.
Instead of promoting unity in our church, our nation, and the world, his comments seem to have fostered division. One of our concerns was the assertion that being a homemaker is the highest calling for a woman Our community has taught young women and men not just how to be 'homemakers' in a limited sense, but rather how to make a Gospel-centered, compassionate home within themselves, the statement said.
--------
We want to be known as an inclusive, welcoming community, embracing Benedictine values that have endured for more than 1,500 years and have spread through every continent and nation. We believe those values are the core of Benedictine College, the statement read.

(23,441 posts)Condemn the moronic administrators who decided to invite this snake to speak. Maybe the college needs new leadership.

(65,793 posts)What idiot thought this guy had anything valuable to the graduates, especially when over half were women?
53% of their student population is male, but their 4 year retention of women students is much higher. (72%-62%)
Their #1 major receiving degrees is nursing, which is a career dominated by women.
The administration knows all those statistics. Why invite this guy?
On top of that, a commencement speaker in his 20s? Maybe go with someone whose age imparts some wisdom from experience.
Stupid decision.

gritting ones teeth and sitting it out.
On the other hand, having to listen to that jerk would be a motive for a mass exodus.

(26,420 posts)Sisters of St. Joseph, back in the 60's. YIKES!
Yup, I went to a Catholic school for 1st through 8th grade. Suffice it to say that I was not a good fit.
Strangely, the Mother Superior, Mother Adeline, really like me. I'm not sure why. Sister Patricia, my home room teacher, absolutely did not but there wasn't much she could do about that, other than radiate attitude. Others weren't so lucky. She could be really cruel.
I was designated to be one of 4 'office girls' who had special privileges and responsibilities. One day Sister Patricia got called out of the classroom and had no choice but to have me take attendance. She handed me the grade book and there I saw the IQs of each and every student, written next to their name. I told my best friend's mom (I would NEVER have told my mom about any of this) and she said that she worked in the school office and even she didn't have access to that information.
Triggered memory. Sorry to ramble.
