Saturday night, Curtis Sliwa (WABC) was blathering about how he no longer is interested in the Yankees when they're in their home because they stopped playing God Bless America by Kate Smith during the Seventh Inning Stretch.
There's overkill. The Star Spangled Banner is played/sung at the beginning of the game b/c it's the National Anthem. Seventh Inning Stretch is redundant with patriotism.
And if the Yankees were to have a patriotic song during the Seventh Inning Stretch, why not Marian Anderson singing My Country, Tis of Thee?

Jersey Devil
(9,883 posts)at every home game during the 7th inning stretch and started playing the song just after 9/11. Originally it was the Kate Smith version, but the controversy over Smith aside, Bob Merrill had a long time association with the Yankees and even had his own Yankee jersey with the number 1 1/2.
Sliwas is just another right wing jerk.

(8,212 posts)Fun fact: Woody Guthrie hated "God Bless America" and wrote "This Land is Your Land" in response.
