Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Sunday doubled down on his opposition to further U.S. aid to Israel, suggesting Americans do not want to be complicit in the starvation of children in Gaza.
Well, I understand
look, every Republican as I understand it, wants to give huge amounts of money to Israel, Sanders said during an interview with NBC Newss Meet the Press. My guess is that many Republicans want Israel to go into Rafah, despite the incredible humanitarian destruction that will cause, and there are Democrats who also feel that way.
But this is what I will tell you, Kristen. That is not what the American people feel. Poll after poll suggests that the American people want an immediate ceasefire. They want massive humanitarian aid to get in, he continued. The people of our country do not want to be complicit in the starvation of hundreds of thousands of children.
Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, has repeatedly called for a stop to U.S. aid amid the civilian death toll and depleting humanitarian resources. More than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Hamass Oct. 7 attacks.

(86,103 posts)Along with every last hostage, whether they are alive, returned. This all started when Hamas broke the last ceasefire on 10/07. Will they agree to a new ceasefire or is Israel the only one expected to be held accountable and Hamas can continue to attack and kill at will.
I read the article and Bernie is not clear on what Israel should do if Hamas refuses.

And over 70% of Gazans supported the Hamas attacks of 10/7

The answer to your question is "Wherever Hamas hides, find them & eliminate them". THEY choose to hide among civilians.

(19,495 posts)That's why the OCHA information page includes a disclaimer.
Other yet-to-be verified figures are also sourced.

It appears that OCHA is no longer specifically citing the Gaza Media Office as the source for the breakdown numbers of women and children killed.

(19,495 posts)On May 8, there was an unexplained change in the way OCHA is choosing to report and present the Hamas's fatality numbers.
OCHA should specifically address why they are no longer citing the Gaza Media Office for the numbers of women and children killed and exactly what informed their decision to downgrade those numbers.
As for the disclaimer, the public deserves to know exactly which data on the information page are verified and which are not. Noting that "Other yet-to-be verified figures are also sourced" is unhelpful at best.

(4,054 posts)Hamas knows that by hiding among civilians they have "dehumanized" them and turned them into shields (and propaganda).

I see. Interesting.

(86,103 posts)I also wonder where all that humanitarian aid went. I think that Hamas has taken the lion's share for themselves. As you said they hide among the civilians, they don't care about them they just use them.

According to U.N. data, an average of 70 food trucks entered Gaza per day before the war; an average of more than 100 food trucks have entered each day in March.
I am guessing the problems are in distribution more then quantity.

(1,096 posts)Most Americans want a ceasefire. Biden can make that happen. He's the President of the USA with great power
Biden has learned a lot from Bernie who has been pushing Biden to help poor people. Lots of the good things Biden has done is by following Bernie.
It sure would have been nice if Bernie had won the presidency but Biden has done okay and that is why Bernie is backing Biden. Now Joe needs to just demand a ceasefire from Israel.

(27,092 posts)"Jonathan Alter, author of 'The Defining Moment,' on FDR's first hundred days, argued that labeling Biden a socialist was nonsense. In fact, both FDR and Biden were misunderstood. 'Franklin Roosevelt was not a Bernie Sanders Democrat,' he explained. 'There's this complete misunderstanding of him. He wasn't a socialist and used [Republican president] Herbert Hoover's bank rescue plan. The ardent progressives of the day were saying, 'Take over the banks! ... And FDR was like, 'No. I'm going to leave the banks in private hands. I'm not going to do it the progressive way.'
"Biden, like FDR, believed the government had to tackle the current crisis with bold experimentation. He was an FDR Democrat and always had been. 'Joe Biden grew up in a Democratic, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson household,' said Alter. They were solid Democrats. He was always a lunch-bucket Democrat. Those were the FDR Democrats.' Almost a century later, the urgent crisis of the pandemic was Biden's equivalent of the Great Depression, a call to action.
"I asked Biden's friend Ted Kaufman if Biden's ideology had changed since he became president. 'Not a whit,' he said emphatically. 'I haven't seen Joe Biden change in terms of who he is, and I've known him for forty-nine years.' ... Mike Donilon, Biden's political strategist, said ... 'You can look at Build Back Better and say it's an effort to be like FDR, a transformation ... But here's a different way to look at it: Joe Biden was a single father for five years. He looks at what folks are going through with childcare, daycare, and he's asking the question, how are they going to make it? ... That's a pretty straightforward question that says, 'You know what? I've lived that experience.'"
Myth that FDR/LBJ policies were "democratic socialism" instead of plain old usual liberal Democratic and that Democrats, including Biden, have to be pushed to the Left because they ignore and don't care about the working class, are out-of-touch elites.
