Richmond VA Girl Scout stands up to bullying by County Supervisors -- you will love this story!!

Here’s a great story from the Richmond VA area.

Hanover County is part of the Richmond area. The School Board is appointed by the County Board of Supervisors. Last year the Supervisors appointed a majority of book-banning wingnuts to the School Board who immediately set about banning books. Well, they didn’t exactly call it “banning books” but that’s what they did.

Enter Senior Girl Scout Kate Lindley from Hanover High School who was working on her Gold Award, the Girl Scout equivalent of the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Award.

Kate’s Gold Award project was to identify all books that had been banned by the Hanover County School Board (around 100) and create book nooks that stocked the books at businesses and other locations, along with descriptions of the books and explanations of why they had been banned.

At last night’s Supervisors’ meeting, Kate was one of five Girl Scout Gold Award winners who were recognized by the Supervisors. However, when it came time to read a description of Kate’s project, the Supervisors edited the award wording to remove references to “banned books” and other comments they didn’t like so it wasn't really clear what Kate had done.

Kate – ever the respectful young lady – graciously accepted her commendation from the Supervisors, then, in her speech thanking them for recognizing her, she read her full award commendation from the Girl Scouts, complete with the “banned book” references. The book-banning Supervisors were not happy but the audience loved it!!

"School age children" sounds more like 8 year olds. I suppose those pickle faced Christian soldiers want to keep kids goiung through and well past puberty at a third grade reading level until they are married off to whoever their Daddies pick out for them.

My mother said she didn't give a shit what I read as long as I was reading and that's one thing I've always been grateful for.

These old bluenoses aren't protecting the kids from anything they're too young to understand. They're protecting themselves from kids who understand all too well.
