(66,150 posts)That makes the two digit number divisible by 9.
For any number divisible by 9, the sum of the digits is 9 or a factor of 9 Since we're only dealing with 2 digit numbers, and we're starting with a single digit, there's no other answer but 9.
The adding 3 is only necessary to assure that the 2nd multiplication is a 2 digit number.
For instance, if we only picked '1', we'd get an answer of 9 without adding that 3. Even '2' doesn't need because 2×3×3 is 18, & 1+8=9.
As I was reading the instructions I knew the answer was going to be 9!
But, I waited until I did the arithmetic before I looked at the list.

(14,644 posts)But there are a number of totally outstanding movies that aren't on this list.
1. The Godfather. Arguably one of the best movies ever made.
2. Pulp Fiction. Classic Americana. Very funny, but serious at the same time because the things you find yourself laughing at really aren't funny.
3. Harry Potter - yeah I know it is like 9 movies, but still...
4. LOTR - I know it doesn't 'fit' the books, but it is amazing standing alone.
A bunch of others.
The Stand is good
The William Hurt/Saskia Reeves version of Dune. That was a miniseries.
The Wizard of Oz
Outlaw Josie Wales
Men in Black
This list caused some good memories. My favorites on your list are Star Wars, Jaws, Casablanca, Raiders and Titanic. Remember at the Oscars when As Good as it Gets (also a great movie) was against Titanic, and Jack Nicholson won in one of the categories - he got up there and joked that since Titanic pretty much swept that year, he had that 'sinking feeling.' Very funny. Jack is a bit...crazy...though.

(66,150 posts)Unless of course, one does the arithmetic wrongly.
If the choice of the first number was limited to 2 to 9 (instead of one through nine) we wouldn't even need to add the three.
NanaCat
(2,332 posts)Still a cute way to go about it, though.
ProfessorGAC
(66,150 posts)...unless the 1 through 9 chosen is "one", we don't even need to add to three.
The adding three though, does create more mystery & clouds the multiply by nine thing.
It's a fun bit!
