A Singapore-flagged vessel struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the Coast Guard said. Part of the span, which carries Interstate 695, has collapsed, the authorities said.
A cargo ship struck a bridge that crosses outer Baltimore Harbor early Tuesday, triggering a collapse, the authorities said.
The Coast Guard received a report of an impact at 1:27 a.m. Eastern time at the Francis Scott Key Bridge, said Matthew West, a petty officer first class for the Coast Guard in Baltimore.'>>>

The water in Baltimore Harbor is currently about 48 degrees Fahrenheit, or 9 degrees Celsius, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Hypothermia can occur in any water temperature below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Its still not clear how many people were on the bridge when the cargo ship made impact, or what happened to them. Johnny Olszewski Jr., the Baltimore County executive, said on social media that an emergency response was ongoing. He did not elaborate and could not be reached for comment.

(134,783 posts)'The owners of the Dali, a Singapore-flagged ship, confirmed in an emailed statement that the vessel had collided with one of the pillars of the Francis Scott Key Bridge around 1:30 a.m. Eastern. All crew members, including two pilots on board, were accounted for and there were no injuries on the ship, the statement said. The cause of the collision has yet to be determined, and the owners and the vessel's managers were cooperating with the authorities, according to the statement. . .

(102,098 posts)At the start of the video, the length of the ship you can see is a lot more than by the time of the collision - then, it's almost head on to where the camera is.

(83,467 posts)1:27am Eastern time is too early for the start of morning drive traffic, assuming thats a major commuter thoroughfare. Hopefully there werent many motorists on the bridge when it gave way. But still awful and horrifying for an unlucky few.
I dont know the roads of metropolitan Baltimore so I couldnt guess about where the high-density traffic patterns are. Shit, what a calamity!

(17,132 posts)First, prayers for any poor souls who were on the spans that collapsed. But in addition to replacement of the bridge, there will be a major impact on the Port of Baltimore if there is no other access. Could take many months, or longer, to reopen. It's a shame that pilot wasn't headed for the Kerch Bridge in Crimea instead.

What a disaster. My heart goes out to all who are dead, missing, and their families.
I hope the captain of that ship lived so we can find out what kind of murderous bug he had up his ass!
What a tragedy.
